I'm at it again....
« on: March 15, 2008, 08:14:34 am »
I'm still trying to learn to mesh.  And I'm making some progress.  Lint pointed me in the direction of a tutorial that at first was nearly impossible for me to understand, but now I'm slowly understanding it.

However, after a few sessions with Mudd and TUS, although I'm still no where near the level I need to be in order to do an entire ship, at the very least I know how to use splines to make a saucer.

Here's some images of what I've got so far.  The saucer stands at 3,520 polys, chopped down from a little over 7k.  And the polys were chopped from the rim alone.  Still more poly chopping to do.

Looks good so far
If your looking for real low poly but yet trying to keep the roundness try welding verts in areas that dont need smoothenss, like any flat plain .

Exactly what I'm doing with the rim.  I've done 3 other splines before this one, and noticed that if I have a rounded edge rim, there tends to be a bunch of small polys packed in close.  That's the case with this saucer here.

Before I decided to get some sleep this morning, I had managed to hack off more polys to get it down to roughly 2500, and I'm still not done yet.

It's been a while since I've really done anything in terms of trying to make something from scratch in MAX.

I've recently made a small breakthrough that I'm somewhat happy with, and actually look good.

I made my first pylons.

Progress in me learning to mesh is slow, but at least there is some progress.

Here's a render of me first pylons.
