Title: So, everyone IS gonna keep it up on the Taldren SETI team, right?
Post by: FPF-AJTK on June 24, 2004, 04:50:19 pm
I know I am, as long as it is available. Be a shame to quit when we are getting so close to the top, and its a nice way to keep a small part of Taldren alive by showing our support and appreciation.

Indeed, if you are NOT on the Taldren SETI team, and you have one or more computers that stay on 24/7, how bout signing up for it as a tribute? Taldren might not be around anymore, but we can still make em THE top rated small company in the world if we get enough people to sign up to help.  :notworthy:

Look in the Ten Forward forum (if its here) and check the SETI thread, IKV Nemesis has all the schimzet you need to set it up.

SETI is here in OT.  But at the same time Taldren is closing up, SETI is moving up.  Up to BOINC.  And that may be an issue for some.

It is going to require client migration and it is going to reset all the WU counters.  For those with a lot of past WU it may be demoralising.  For those without a SETI history it is a great chance to start on even footing moving into the future.

well crapola, that sucks. Then again, Taldrens team puts out a HUGE amonut of WU's, so it actually could HELP Taldren get ahead quicker.

Until there is a good WU caching app for BOINC i doubt many of the bigger producers will switch over.

So, what IS BOINC? A new server?

If they dont switch over, does that mean they simply will stop doing SETI for now?

BOINC is Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing.

Not a new server so much as a new architecture.  They took what they learned from the SETI@home project and created a new modular architecture.  With BOINC you can have several different projects at once timesharing on your 'puter.  Right now the only other project I spotted was some sort of weather prediction thing still in Beta but it looked interesting.  As time goes on I expect there will be more projects to choose from.  Though it is hard to match the glamour of searching for ET there will hopefully be some that present a good case for signing on.

The downside of BOINC is it is brand new and not far out of Beta itself.  I have not run into instability but I am a piker at this.  The newness shows in the present lack of addons that a lot of the Taldren team need for their server farm situations.  So a lot of them will be hanging on with SETIclassic till either someone turns off the lights or those queing, caching, and 'run as service' addons show up.  Whichever comes first.  The writing is on the wall for SETIclasic - but I have not seen a specific date carved in stone and there may be a long twilight.

Thanks for the info. So, for the time being anyhow, SETI will be operative as it always has been, but it is unknown for how long.

And we will eventually be able to switch over. But Raven and IKV Nemesis and the other big boys might not be able/interested to switch until they come out with more options to run the thing.
Gotcha.

I will continue to crunch WU for Taldren until there are no more to crunch

Me too!

149 Units from this little burnt CPU...

and more to come!

I think that and the "Code command" project  is the ultimate tribute!

:police: On a separate note, I found an email address for FerretLXIX and AlienLXIX and sent them a note as to what happened and where we are. I think Taldren went down so fast they didn't even know what happened .

Figures, I finally get a modern pc that can crunch the crap outs WU's (p4 2.8) and now SETi is changing over, lol.

OFW. That way I can start off fresh with fast turn times, instead of having to knock down 3 years of slow times to improve my average. Had about 7 or 8 hundred back in late april when I got this new box, now Im up to 1100+. Nearly double my total in 2 months, rofl.
