Title: MS Word Question
Post by: Brush Wolf on July 19, 2004, 12:37:05 pm
Since I recently became unemployed I have been using Word quite a bit lately. It is driving me nuts by asking if I wish to save changes before closing when I have made no changes . Can anyone here tell me what I have to do to get it to quit asking when I have done nothing to the document? I am using Word XP if that makes any difference. Thank you.

I've not noticed this, but I mainly use Mac versions of Word.

If you open a doc, and close it -> no save prompt
If you open a doc, add something, then remove it (leaving the document "unchanged") -> Word flags it as changed as soon as you typed.

The thing that kills me with Word is the auto bulleting/outline function.  I have yet to figure out how to turn that off.

I was doing nothing to the documents, just open and print, and oddly now Word is behaving itself. Now if I could write a decent cover letter.  :'(

SRaek, that is one of the few things that I have figured out in Word. click on Format, select Bullets & Numbering, each tab has several choices including none or no.

Yea, that works for a while but when I open a new document it's the same problem again.  I need to figure out how to turn it of permanently.

SRaek, I think you have to save it as default or some jazz like that.  I don't have the problem anymore (I did, though!), so I don't really remember exactly, but that SOUNDS about right...

Anybody try StarOffice or OpenOffice?

I have OpenOffice installed but I don't really use it for anything. I am one of those people who are so used to MS Office that it is hard to change.

Do a search and find Normal.DOT which is your default document template.  Open it up.  It will be blank, nothing visible.  Make the formatting changes you want.  Save the file and voila'.  You have changed your default for new documents.

One thing to add to Gambler's excellent suggestion. Copy the Normal.DOT file to your desktop before you make changes in the original one. That way you can o back to what it was originally in case something else gets messed up or you don't like the way it woks now.

Thanks, Gambler, I'll give that a try.  I think I have looked for normal.DOC, which explains my problem.
