It's good to see that some people seem to understand what the Olympics are all about. And while he will still probably get a medal because he swam in the qualifying, I think this is a great gesture and shows a great attitude.

You're right, that is certainly cool. Some athletes would keep all the glory for themselves.

I was going to post on this when I saw it yesterday, but unfortunately didn't have time to do so. I was really impressed when I heard this, and it shows that Phelps has a ton of class.

I agree...many would have stayed on the relay just to say they did it...Phelps is letting someone else's light shine, a very hard thing to do in these times

I guess I'll be the lone voice of dissent. Although it was a cool thing for him to do, granted, it was wrong. He is supposed to be representing the US and by handing over his position he's not putting the best athelete (himself) in the event.
Nice gesture, though.

They won by a killer margin setting new world records. Maybe with Phelps in there they would have won with an greater margin. I don't know.
Of course even not swimming he gets a medal. Which I find somewhat wierd.

Abfalter,
Phelps' decision wasn't wrong, and he was thinking of the team on this one. Crocker, the person that replaced Phelps, is particularly strong in the butterfly, which is the leg that he replaced Phelps in. Quoting a CBC story...

Crocker did an excellent imitation of the dominating Phelps, swimming a 50.28 butterfly leg. It was the fastest lap of the night.
It's also important to note that each leg is 100m, meaning that Crocker had to swim a 100m butterfly leg. I'll give you one guess...who do you think the world record holder is in the 100m butterfly?

Me! ;D
Actually, I think even if Crocker wasn't the greatest in the butterfly it would have been the right thing to do. To me it's all about the competition and good sportsmanship, not about the medal count.

Right on!! I agree . Sadly enough it all seems to have been lost in todays Me,Me society and media hype. :( :( :(
