You want tactical demonstrations or comedy?
Hey, I have a GREAT comedy film starring me, Capt'n Jeff and ... a 'Guest'!
On another episode of:
SFC's Red vs Blue
Background:
Dizzy's Sensor Officer: "Commander Dizzy! Enemy Contact! Dropping out of warp dead ahead!"
Dizzy: "Red Alert! Weapons pre-heat! Prepare for battle! Navigation, direct intercept course..."
Comms:
Capt. Jeff: "Hailz!"
Dizzy: "Yo Ho!"
Capt. Jeff: "Flying a Droner, Diz?"
Dizzy: "Yeah, my Battleship is getting a paint job. :P"
Plenty of time to get a coke I think. So off I run to the galley and grab a cold one and make it back to see that Jeff is still 45k away and closing fast. Perfect, I think. Hey... wait a damn second... What the hell is this?
Dizzy: "Hey Jeff, did you hit me?"
Capt. Jeff: "Ummm... No."
Dizzy: "Did I hit something? What hit me?"
Capt. Jeff: "Whatta you mean?"
Dizzy: "My fwd port shield is red."
Capt. Jeff: "It is?"
With Jeff at speed 31 and very close now, I decide to turn left of Jeff's NCD so as not to present that open shield for him to phaser thru... This was followed shortly by my engineer yelling at me about internals...
I'm getting attacked by a ghost ship? Maybe a ship model didnt load?
Capt. Jeff: "It's a...!"
Dizzy: "A WHAT!"
Capt. Jeff: "The ...! "
Dizzy: "OMG! Are you serious? I didnt even see it! OMG"
As it turns out, I turned DIRECTLY into it in order to get my downed shield away from Jeff. A mistake I never recovered from. The rest is history... 8) GG Jeff... Dizzy = 0, Alliance 2.
Tip: Take a look around to see what may or may not be in the mission. New scripts = new terrain... Scary.

I saved one of Soreyes and myself as a demonstration of "Do not try to DeathDrag someone bigger than you" footage.

The slimy EEK Frog strikes again. At least the law of averages balances things out. So far, one for Alliance when Jem got bush-whacked by the dark-side of the night planet (PL17 in shiplist.txt) and one for Coalition with Dizzy.
Suns are nasty if you get too close. Asteroids are not much better. :P Always check your map view cuz ya never now what kind of terrain the mission map randomizer will generate for ya in the EEK patrols. If any were generated at all in your given mission run.
Full Details are in SGODEV for Admins. but the abstracted condensed version is that:
There is a 25% chance of Planet/Suns/Moons being generated (if generated, there is a 50% chance they have accompagnying Ion Storm; also for planets, a 33% chance they get a moon), 25% chance that Asteroids are generated in 3 selected locations, and 25% chance that anomalies like Pulsars or Space/Time fissure are generated.
To get any terrain generated at all, the odds are (1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4) = 3/4 or 75%.
To get 2 groups in the same mission, the odds are (1/4 * 1/4) = 1/8 or 12.5%.
To get all 3 groups in the same mission would be (1/4 * 1/4 * 1/4) = 1/64 or 1.6%.
To get all 3 groups in the same mission with accompagnying Ion storms and moon are ((1/4 * 1/3 * 1/2) * 1/4 * 1/4) = 1/384 or 0.26%.

I would like to title this movie . . .

It would be great to have a movie deposit spot...IIRC..Jack-O-Lantern used to host a site you could post movies to...
Maybe we can bug frey to set something up... ;)

Aside from the obvious affects of running into asteroids, planets and the like....what are the dangers of some of these other items? I can't even remember anymore...

The planets are harmless because they are the "0" variants in the shiplist including the moon (ie. PL0 thru PL17 in shiplist.txt). Of course, some sneaky Admin. might just put some weapons on them in the shiplist.txt and then you'll need to watch out. The sun will do shield damage when you get too close. Most Asteroids have dust clouds. 3 types of asteroids can be generated: small, large and ice. There is also the moving asteroid N-AST that won't move cuz I'd have to pick a side to put in on. For GW3, I ran out of time in figuring out a solution to get the asteroid moving when it's in Neutral mode. Again some sneaky Admins. might put weapons on the N-AST asteroid. :O
Ion Storms will do damage when you go through them but you can hide in there cuz it's hard to see a ship in an Ion Storm, in F3 view at least. Pulsars and Space/Time fissure are no-damage light baubles. Maybe later, some scripting stuff can be put in to make them do stuff. But, you can hide from the enemy in F3 view at least by going through them and keeping them between you and your enemy.
PS. Something I will absolutely need to put in the next EEK-Readme.txt of the next EEK mission pack is that the following shiplist.txt items must be defined:
N-AST, PL0, PL1, PL2, PL3, PL4, PL5, PL6, PL7, PL8, PL9, PL10, PL11, PL12, PL13, PL14, PL15, PL16, PL17.
They originate from the stock shiplist.txt so it should never be an issue.

iirc, Ion Storms bypass your shields to do damage.
-
One thing I forgot to mention is that for those ambitious Server Admins., the EEK scripts are smart enough to detect whether map objects are defined or not. So, they can design their own mission maps by playing with the designated starting positions. Turning map objects on/off, moving around the possible starting positons for each map object group. It only takes about 30 minutes to compile the whole EEK mission pack so if a Server Admins. gives me their customized mission maps they can have their own customized EEK mission pack for their campaign.
For example, if a Server Admin. did not want Ion Storms in the mission pack at all, or not have them appear in certain situations like mb missions run in asteroid hexes, they could take the mission maps and remove the starting positions for the Ion Storms and they are gone on the EEK mission pack re-compile for their dyna. :D
Full details are in SGODEV.

Serves me right. I am the 1st recorded death of an evil SGODev idea I helped work on. What are the odds?
Seriously tho, that terrain thing is very cool. I like it. Adds flavor and newness.
-
Only problem I have had with the variable terrain was when I started about 35 away from a black hole at a dead stop.
Other than that, no problems.

Thanks for the run-down, Karnak.
I kinda like the random evilness...heheh.
