THE SPIRIT OF A SHIP

World War II combat veteran Chuck Edwards gave Kenneth Williams, commanding officer of the USS Chung-Hoon, a packet of memorabilia from the USS Sigsbee yesterday. Edwards and nine other veterans from the Sigsbee were guests aboard the new destroyer, named for Rear Adm. Gordon P. Chung-Hoon. Chung-Hoon was commanding officer of the Sigsbee, which was attacked by a kamikaze pilot during the Battle of Okinawa on April 14, 1945. According to USS Sigsbee Reunion President Marvin Green, the Sigsbee's port shaft was destroyed, with four sailors killed, 18 missing in action and 89 injured. Despite orders to sink the ship, Chung-Hoon kept it afloat to save the men who couldn't swim. Green said of the new destroyer, "We feel that Chung-Hoon's spirit will live in this ship."

Cool stuff indeed.  But I have to ask how come the Navy puts non-swimmers out in ships?  I would expect that a big part of Navy boot camp would be ensuring that everybody knew how to swim.

Cool post Stephen :goodpost:

Now about the Non-swimmer stuff,  well I always wondered that also and to find out not everyone goes swimming on a regular basis so, that there is a basic test we do in bootcamp in which you are to jump off a raised platform, swim a certain distance, and then tread water for a bit.
If the swimmers pass, then they move on but for the not so capable ones, they are given additional swimming lessons but, it does not mean that they keep in practice.  I guess that's why there are a majority of capable swimmers to help the less fortunate out.
