Title: Valley Forge Class WIP
Post by: Sandman3D on September 29, 2004, 06:41:50 pm
Well, I said I was gonna do it, so here's the mesh. ;D Man, I need to take it slow...between the Lancaster Class I just released (5 hours to finish up this morning), and the 2 hours on this mesh...sheesh!! :P Top it off, haven't eaten yet...no wonder I'm woozy and getting a slammin' headache. :D

Anyway, here's some pics...

Looks very good except for a couple of proportion thingies that bugged me; the rear of the sec-hull is way to long and graceful, needs to be a lot more stumpy, the undercut is too big, it just don't look right when you compare it to the original. Also the top of the saucer is too flattened while the bottom is too bulbous, the two domes should be symetrical to each other. I know this is still WIP but I really love this design and would like to see it come as nice as some of the many CGIs I've seen of it, but you know playable in SFC.

Thanx guys!! ;D

M, you got a pic? The one I'm using from SFM shows the Primary essentially like I have it...I do admit the bottom is too rounded...needs to be narrower, but it's not symmetrical with the top...there is a noticable difference. :-\ Oh, thanx for the notice on the 2ndary...when I did the rounding on the rear, I forgot to compensate and make it "stumpy". :P :smackhead: ;D

Like I said, I started it after working on the Koryu all morning for release, and I forgot to eat. :lame: Combine that with not putting the schematics into max (I eyeball it :P), and my proportions are usually a little off...but I will re-work this.

I opened the schematics from SFM in PSP7 and did a comparison, the two halves are so nearly identical I couldn't tell by eyeballing, there's only a tiny bit more height to the bottom half, a couple of pixels at that scale but the top on yours is almost flat on the top and the bottom really does need a bit of shrinkage, anyway, must be off, have to commute to uni for a couple ' weeks.

OK, started texturing after fixing things. :) Here's a couple of pics to show the texture work and the altered saucer bottom. How is she?

Bottom looks very nice, the top is still squashed though, it tapers too sharply to a flat, textures looking good though. Keep up the good work man.

Thanx M!! ;D

This little bugger is surprisingly tough to get the primary shaped right, but I love the design, lol. 8)

The bottom half of the sechull needs some work. Good start though. I REALLY would like to see accurate meshes of Masao's ships for SFC, that way I can begin my texture tweeking. :D

BTW S3D, have you tried to make a "schematic box" of the Valley Forge blueprints in what ever program your using (Max I think)? I've heard that it helps to get meshes accurate and this should make it easier to compare.

I "think" it's when you cut up the schematics to show top, side, front etc. and make them your viewport background. I've tried it, but didn't like it. :-\ Thanx though, I might have to retry it...next phase in my continuing, slow education. :P

Awsome stuff mate....

A few points if I may.... The registry need work ( Im sure you have noticed  :-\ bad mee for being a tw*t) Also somthing I did recently... the hull texture looks a little too prominent... mabey a bit late in the day to say this... a lighter shade mabey??? Hey Im no pro but I think it would look great with a lighter shade of hull texture....

Apart from that... excellent... its looking great... can wait for you to try another render when its finished so I can add it to my ever growing collection!!!!!

i would agree, tos designs don't have much in the way of aztecing, so if you do use aztecs, i would go very light on it  (and have more reptitions, yours look very stretched)

Did a little more on this...completely forgot about it actually. Still need to address some of the above points, but here's a look so far...

Looks great, but in reguard to the registry IMHO ya need to do something about the way the 1 sits. I believe if you  do it like this........ NCC (on one side) the - (across the raised area) and then the Numbers (on the other side) you'll have a much cleaner appearance. Or reduce the font size to clear the raised area on the front of the saucer. Just my $.02

Yeah, but, that's the way Masao has it...http://www.starfleet-museum.org/valleyforge.jpg but I'll try going down a couple on the font size, less bold. :P

Hmmm well would ya look at that. I didn't know that. Wonder why he did it that way?

Well, since most of those ships use basicall the same hull, he probably just added the torp box and then said OY!!! ;D

In regard to the font.. you need to type each letter seprately, then place and rotate each letter... it give a mutch better effect than the arc tool.  ;)
