Title: cable modem

ok new to this cable thing it should be hooked up here in a couple hours, and I know there are some ports that need to be open but I cant find out which ones or how its done so if some one could be so kind and point me in the right direction to the post that I know I have read or tell me how to do this I would be greatfull.

 If it is just  a modem you wont  have to open any ports up.If it is a router also refer to crims post above.

PS Dont forget to get a good firewallyou will need it on cable.

Yup, what Kurok said. Only need to open ports if you have the router/firwall device between your PC and cable modem. Otherwise it is just like dialup, so make sure the software/XP firewall is either turned off or properly configured with the right ports open.
