so how much processing power would you need to actually build a (properly) functioning HAL 9000?

I didn't think there was really anything to get other than the eye and the song. The page is a 404 page, so the button must take you back to the home page.

Oh, well it would make no sense without the song. It's HAL singing "Daisy" as Dave is finishing pulling the chips.

I remember reading that the original voice of HAL was Martin Balsam, but Kubrick dropped him because he read his lines with too much emotion.

Seems to me that the blocks towards effective AI are software based, not hardware.
