Title: If the Brits are doing why can't we?
Post by: Jack Morris on December 09, 2004, 11:28:14 pm
Stem cell tech, especially when livers can be remade from bone marrow cells of the same human? I think the religious right can suck my wanker. As a recovering alkie, I can attest to the fact that I would gladly give up a few bone marrow cells to start a new liver. Playing with God? Maybe he/she wanted us to advance to that stage?

In Germany doctors took stem cells from a guy who had cancer in his jaw. It had been eaten away, so they implanted the cells in his side, where a new jaw grew. They grafted it on with mesh, and he can now talk and eat.....this naturally will extend to organs. I support my countries view on this.....Blair wants the UK to become the leading nation on genetics. We were very annoyed with the US  governments recent attempt at the UN to get it banned.

Me Thinks the US government saw Star Trek II one too many times and are afraid that it will lead to that.

Honestly though, its getting to the point where I'm beginning to believe that ALL religion is become obsolete very fast.  that doesn't mean we should just throw aside their good qualities, morals and such like that, but with our technology moving the way it is, sometimes these "questions" of "playing God" are slowing us down too much.

God is a He.  How do I know this?  God knocked up the virgin mary, ergo God must be a dude.
The US is taking a very weak and closed minded approach to stem cell research.  Sure, we'll allow partial birth abortions in some place and actually entertain those who wish to kill viable human lives growing inside of them, but taking a few cells to extend or improve human life.  No, that's steppingover the line.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not completely anti abortion, it's just that I run into many many people who look at it as solely being a matter of choice for the mother, and completely ignore the fact that there is a little person growing inside of them and that maybe, just possibly that little [erson might have rights too.
Stem cell research is a good thing.  Clearly, there are limits to what should be done with it, but those limits have yet to be properly tested yet.

At the risk of whatever, I warn ALL of you guys, except for the topic starter, your posts have crossed that border into offensive territory.

Who am I?  No one, just an offended reader/poster.  There are ways of expressing your support or disdain for a position without insulting (lots of) people.

See you guys about these stomping grounds somewhere later.

I may remind people that the stem cell tech I speak of is for livers, the only human organ that can regenerate itself, within limits. I think the day will come when we can start other organs from within our own cells without harming others.

Transplants are NOT the answer, would you want somebody else's organs in you? I would prefer die and face the creator.

What have we said that is offensive?

I ask that you each inform yourselves of the issues you comment on before you post previously corrected falsehoods.

For starters, there is no ?ban.? The president?s policy affects only embryonic stem cells. There is nothing in the policy that stops researchers from using stem cells obtained elsewhere, like adult stem cells.

Second, the policy applies only to research using federal money for embryonic stem-cell research. Private and state money is still available, and Harvard  University has just announced it will clone human embryos.

And the federal policy doesn?t prohibit the use of all embryonic stem cells. Federally funded research can be conducted using stem cell lines that were already available in August 2001. As Kass points out, there are enough of these lines ?for years of essential basic research.?

Thanks for the correction, but no need for words like asinine.  If I'm wrong, I'm wrong, and I'll own up to it.

I'm sorry.  I'm just getting really frustrated with the same misinformation being circulated around again and again.  I expect it in the general public, but this issue has been around three times here in the forums already.
