Don't do it. The game is not designed to handle it. I will post detailed instructions on how to do it if you ABSOLUTELY MUST, but they will be technical and require a good computer knowledge to understand and execute without mangling your system...
Details later - I just had to post this ASAP - seen too many problems caused by it now.

Err I have one in games/OP
one in games/ OP2
and one in games / OPorig
and they all work fine.
Am I doing something wrong?

I've used multiple installs for years. I look forward to your details. Perhaps I will learn something that will improve my gaming experience.

It's not that difficult, you just need to not be a retard with using Windows Explorer.
-
What's windows explorer got to do with it? And if I can survive for 2 years doing multiple installs, anyone can. ;D

If it works for me..

Yes, you are all aware of which install is which and can point mod installers to the appropriate directory. Not everyone can. I will describe 2 types of multiple installs - one simply a copy of the game folder (good way) - the other - a second or third install from CD to another location (bad kind - only one registry setting for location is avaialable not three or four).
Yes I'm aware that experienced players probably know how to take a snapshot of their OP install and save it elsewhere, and can thus run multiple installs on one install location by swapping out folders (only installed from CD once). This will work.
Install from CD multiple times and which one gets the registry setting? The first or the last? When mod installers look for the install directory they look in the registry (unless you all want installers that search your entire hard-drive for OP installations and prompt you for which one to install to... could increase install time by up to 20 minutes or more on some systems...). In this case you must carefully select which copy the mod will install to).
Additionallly things are more complicated than two years ago... people are running multiple OP+ installs too (probably the source of people wanting multiple installs so they can stay on OP+3.4) the thing is OP+ uses only one registry location for its vversion information and install location also... so you see multiple OP+ installs complicates things further...
If you know the game inside and out and run multiple installs, theis thread is not for you, it is for those not so handy with the computer or explorer yet still insist on running mulltiple OP installs.
(all I have time for right now - I'll add detailed instructions, contingincies and complications of multiple installs)
...and don't look at me like I don't know what I'm talking about. :P

It's all a question of where the registry looks, and making sure that you swap your installs around that location.

Bingo! (Well said - thanks.)

1- the game uses the registry path for various things..
2- .. individual mission scripts may be using the registry path, especially if they're using the ShipList API. (they gotta know where the shiplist is after all)
3- uninstalls and installs all depend on this as well

Hmmm.. <lightbulb!> thinks about the dramatic increase in problems with missions we've been seeing lately (a multiple OP installation meme?) - "Are you running multiple installs?" will be my first question when debreifing mission testers now...

My brain hurts...

What's wrong with multiple installs?
<------still has Storm Season 2 installed

Wow, not bad! (holy SFC pack-rat batman! :o)
They're only OK if you do it right (which you probably have) - like FireSoul summarised above, and I intend to add details later when I have the time.
hmmm... Bonk starts thinking new or updated mod swapper... (needs to have unlimited slots..with disk usage warnings, how to get around the giant model folders people have though... I guess the swapper needs to read the shiplist and only copy the necessary models... hmm what about missions...). Is Strat still working on his? I really need to evaluate it, its been out for ages.

It's a very easy process for anyone who's familiar with copy/pasting folders. For anyone interested:
Let's say you have OP+ 4.0 installed. You want to play on SGO4 but you don't want to have to install/uninstall every time you switch back and forth. So:
(1) Open your "Taldren Software Inc" folder
(2) Copy your "Starfleet Command Orion Pirates" folder and paste it in the same root folder
(3) Rename your new folder (which should be called "Copy of Starfleet Command Orion Pirates") into something like "OP+ 4.0"
(4) Run the SGO4 installer.
You now have 2 folders: "Starfleet Command Orion Pirates", which is SGO4, and "OP+ 4.0", which is 4.0. If you want to switch:
(1) Rename "Starfleet Command Orion Pirates" to "SGO4"
(2) Rename "OP+ 4.0" to "Starfleet Command Orion Pirates"
If you ever get a missing .exe error, you probably spelled "Starfleet Command Orion Pirates" wrong.
Simple!
