Title: How does one map a geosphere to look like a planet?
Post by: Red_Green on January 25, 2005, 02:38:13 pm
I was told I could save polies by using geospheres instead of spheres. I am using milkshape. Spheres are already mapped like a planet and all I nee to do is assign a map. Geopheres I don't get. They seam to be mapped to just 1 point so the entire geoshpere is 1 solid color. remapping it from say top or front will make the textures stretched. Is there a simpler way to get a planet texture to look right on a geosphere?

You should be able to remap it so that the entire texture is used for different faces.

In Max you can do this easily (difference is $700+ program vs $25 program)

if you want RG i can try send me one of the planet textures and ill see if i can map it using max if so i would gladdly map them all for you

Wulf, that would be great. I mapped it in milk from the top, rescaling the outer edges to minimize distortion. Still in the top pic you can see some warping by the equator and also not how huge the pole caps are. I can make the poles smaller by using just the middle of the map but thats mickey mouseing it.

The map I used is the bottom 1. I think you can just save it as a picture or try a print screen, if not let me know and I can zip it up. Oh yea Try using depth 4 (does max use depth to describe geospheres)  If not map it to a sphere that has 500 poligons or close to that. Using spheres with that poly count would save 3000 polies.  ;D  Once you get a geosphere mapped you can send it to me and I can just duplicate it and resize and assign new planet textures as needed. Of course I will credit you for mapping in the released model.

did a quick map on the geosphere at 320 polys here is the zip file with the .mod format i also quickly made a light map for it to show off the lava rivers on the dark side

Thanks Wulf, makes my day. Now I can finish up the Worldship. Looks great and is going to save mega polies this way!

Haven't worked with em yet. But I did  upload it to check it out. Its mapped perfectly, I just have to swap out and resixe the spheres the spheres. Believe it or not using 10 planets I will save close to 5000 poligons.  atmI have just a bit of eye strain so I probably tackle this on the weekend.
