Title: Trekmods SFC2 "beta" releases
Post by: Captain Pierce on February 23, 2005, 07:01:11 pm
It's been hinted at here before, but I thought that it was about time for an official announcement.  :)

Lately, having taught myself SFC2 importation, I've been working lately to get some new ships from the Trekmods.com team into the game.  These are being slowly but surely released as "betas," which basically means that I'm looking for people to play with them and see if they work properly.  Currently, these are only available by going to our forum via the link in my sig; you shouldn't have to register to view or download, although you will if you want to post there.  (And, just for the record, as these are betas, we'd like to keep them available only from our forums for the moment.  ;) )

Currently available ships include:

Klingon D9 (FASA)
Klingon K27 (FASA)
Klingon K'vort
Klingon K't'inga (TMP-era)
Vulcan Surak Science Cruiser
Vulcan Sh'Ran Combat Cruiser

The Ambassador and Oberth classes should theoretically be up tonight; and I also have three Romulan ships in-game (FASA V-6, V-8, and V-11) that you can take a peek at while you're on our forum.  :)  Their beta releases should be available shortly, once I've played with them a little more.

Please check them out and, if you find any problems, I'd ask that you post it on our forum, in the appropriate release thread.  Just makes it easier to keep track of.  :)

Thanks, and I hope you enjoy.  :D

I'm having trouble getting the d/l links to work for the K' T' inga and the K' vort.

I get this error message or the page doesn't load.

"To display this page you need a browser with JavaScript support."

I would appreciate any help getting the two newest  Klingon ships and the upcoming FASA Romulans please.

What browser are you using?  I've never seen (or even heard of) that problem...   ???

How big a of a file can your email handle, KF?  Some of these are up around 1MB...  be glad to send them if you can't DL 'em...

The links for the Sh'ran and K'vort doesn't work.

You know, I'm starting to detect a pattern here...  ships with apostrophes in the name are not working...  let me try re-uploading some re-named .zip's...  ;)

[edit]  OK, the K't'inga, K'vort, and Sh'Ran have been re-uploaded with .zip file names that no longer have apostrophes in them.  ;)

Also, keep in mind that the forum that I'm uploading these to has a tendency to be down every now and then.   :-\  So, if you can't get something, you might try back later...  [/edit]

Thanks Captain Pierce. I got them at the new links.

I'm looking forward to the beta release of the FASA Romulans.

Thank you for sharing these with us.

That'll teach me to use apostrophes in Web links...   :-[

Slight delay on the Ambassador and Oberth, but they should be up tonight.  I'm shooting for the weekend on the Roms...  :)

Why would Vulcans name a ship class after General Shran?   ;D

Oh, and one of the ships' links is misspelled, ".zipp" instead of ".zip", so that until you manually cut, paste, and delete the extra "p", it won't work.

And, your links seem only to work with IE and not Mozilla.

Which one has the extra "p"?

And I use Mozilla Firefox myself, and try to at least click on each of the links to see if it works, although I don't actually bother to go through with the whole download... although admittedly I thought even the ones with the apostrophes worked at first...   :-\

Oh, yeah, and the Sh'Ran thing is freaking bizarre...  but, given the way that Berman & Braga worship Jeffrey Combs, I suppose it's not entirely unexpected...  I'm just surprised there isn't a Defiant-class USS Weyoun or Brunt (or insert one of Combs 12 other DS9 characters ::) ) somewhere in DS9...

Ah, well... that ends well!

I went back and clicked on every forum topic that contained your ships and couldn't find it.  You or someone else must have corrected it!

Anyhow, did Jeffrey Combs play LOTS of characters in DS9??  I mainly thought of him as Weyoun and only later found out he was Brunt.  Who else did he play?  A Klingon maybe?

Yeah, I found it, thanks for the heads-up.  :)

Technically, I guess Combs only had one other role on DS9 that wasn't tied to an existing role (like his appearance as a detective in one of Sisko's 50's-sci-fi-writer "flashbacks"), and that was (IIRC) as an alien who was trying to get Quark to make a Kira holosuite program for him.  That was actually his first Trek appearance, and look what it started...  :D

Dude, you guys do the best Romulans.

Now if only we could 'motivate' our team into doing more models :D

It would be greatly appreciated if you guys could comment on how the models preform on the appropriate threads. This will help us chose which models to put up on our site, and which will need just a little more work. We are also considering using battleclinic as a mirror for the SFC models once they go final just in case the trekmod site decides to go into cyber limbo.

Just put up your beta D'deridex Warbird and give her some adjustments to her textures. She lack's a greeny Forward Disrupter Array :)

There already was a "beta" of the D'Deridex--http://www.thegamingunion.co.uk/Forum/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=16;t=000038.  As for a green forward disrupter array, is that something on the studio model that's missing from ours, or just something you want added?  ;)

And what if anything is the differance between these and a normal release. Got most all the beta releaces and they seem fine to me.

The only difference between the betas and the finals would be the texture sizes. some, but not all of the models use 1024's but we reduced them to 512's for the beta test. This was to prevent unecessary distribution until the final was ready. Not all of them are that way due to how they were textured ( I wont say which ;) ). We decided to do it this way to test how well the mesh itself works. Which is why we want you guys to tell us how they work for you. This is an experiment of ours, and 2 out of 100+ people dont determine if a mesh is liked or disliked, or ready to post.

There were basically 2 reasons we decided to do "beta" releases--

1) I'm extremely new to SFC2 conversion, and wasn't quite sure I was doing everything right just yet.  :D

2) There had been some problems with some earlier Trekmods releases, the sort of stuff that was easier for a fresh eye to pick out, but not apparent to the original converter.  After you've been working with a ship long enough, you stop noticing things.  :)  We figured getting a few more people to take a look at the ships before we did a general release might not hurt.

I was actually going to not announce them here until they were in the "final" release stage, but the simple fact of the matter was that nobody gave us any feedback.  Hoping to get some here, so if there are any problems you see, we want to hear about them.  :)
