Title: Ladder Leagues and such
Post by: toasty0 on March 08, 2005, 04:32:09 pm
While still testing development strategies I thought this would be the best time to get your feedback on what you might like to see in a ladder league. I have started a thread (Ladder league thoughts thread (http://www.dynaverse.net/forum/index.php/topic,163353590.0.html)) on the subject and invite you to give your thoughts on what features you might like.

Balanced play.  And, obviously, Klingons.

Have a Dynaverse server as the arena/venue.  GSA can be a pain in the tail and puts spyware on your system.

Wow - I forgot all about that.

Numerous times I have had conversations with Legendary/Slider about using a D2 server as the venue for a 'League'.  It probably presents a whole host of issues, but we had talked about it on a couple occasions.

Another thing that I just thought of, it should have varying levels of ability, if possible.  Obivously, you want it competitive, but there are several new pilots, and quite honestly, getting your teeth kicked in every match by superior pilots grows old rather quickly.   If there was a way to have the requirements for being in the league established, where you had maybe three levels, it would be more competitive.
Otherwise, the newbies would be of the mind that competing is really a waste of time and effort, since they never get a true chance to improve their skills.  Hard to get better when you die in four minutes or less.

Other than using PBR as a basis as to what can fleet together, not really sure what can be done.

Having a D2 server as a venue is a bad idea IMHO. While it may seem convenient at first glance the inevitable connectivity issues will make it a big PITA for everyone.

GSA and IP games are much more stable.

For a three-on-three league, you are absolutely correct.  I can't even imagine the nightmare that would be.

For one-on-one ladder play, it might not be bad.   I can get back into a D2 much faster after a dropped mission than I can get back into GSA, and I don't have to go through the stardock again since I'll still have the same ship and supplies I had in my last attempt.

Direct IP games are fast as hell.  No Loading BS at all.

Thanks for all your feedback everyone. I will print this out and think about what all of you have said as I develop the software/site.

A general FYI: I have moved the beta test over to my test server: http://www.toasty0.net. This is where I will develop the software. Anyone interested in how things go just pop on by, give it a whirl and let me know if you like it, don't like it, or something on your wish list that's not there.

Incorrect.. some software incorrectly identifies the GSA lunch file as spyware.. at most GSA only places maybe a tracking cookie on your system if you do not have a paid for account.. Put on by the Advertisement Pages.. or maybe a spyware program if you do not have Active X properly set up on your system from the advertisement page.. a paid for account, you can turn off the advertisements, thus preventing the tracking cookies and or spyware put on by the advertisements.. but the Gamespy Arcade program itself and the connection it makes is Spyware free in itself.

I have been monitoring GSA and spyware for the last 2 years.. never once has it infected my system with Spyware.. what ever program you are using for Spyware Removal obviously has not updated their files to the current GSA build version... or the last 10 for that matter.. the GSA Beta before everyone moved from M-Player had spyware.. but not any builds from 1.02.
