Title: Routers hate me
Post by: Hexx on April 06, 2005, 06:51:36 pm
OK
Have a router
have 2 computers
plug both systems into the router
I can get online with one at a time
If systems A is online, B can't get online
IF system B is online, then A cant get online
It doesn't matter if one is off or on, (and if it's on it's connected to the net I think)
as long as nothing on the system is actively running online (IE, no downloads, no games etc) the other one
can get online.

WHY?????

what kind of router? And have you changed any of the default setting?

Linksys something (sighI can look all the stats up I guess)
No haven't changed any default.

It's just weird- I don't have to unplug anything/switch anything etc.
As long as I close IE/whatever on system A, I can walk over to System B and it goes online just fine.
*Now* I've discovered I can run VT from Computer B while Im on A, BUT I still can't get online???

Obviously I've done something stupid-but what??

BTW I can put OP on both systems (from one CD) and run them at the same time right?
(otherwise this is largely a pointless endeavour in the first place)

CD_Key check shouldnt be a problem as dynaverse (i just did it today) doesnt check cd_key so u can run from one cd but
since your both systems are connecting to the same router u cannot be at the same time athe same online game as u gonna have the same public IP address.

I've got a Linksys WRT54G wireless router...have has as many as 3 computers (one direct connect, 2 wireless) on at once, downloading etc, with no problem.  But, can't have more than one in D2 at a time because I have only one IP addy.

You should however to be able to access the internet from both at the same time though.

Were you able to before? Did this just start happening? If it used to work with the default config and now doesn't the easiest way to undo what ever you may have changed is to use the little reset button on the router. It is depressed with a paper clip or pen and resets factory defaults.

Actually I just set the second one up.
But it's cool, if I can't get two games of OP running I really don't need the second one.
Just thought they were assigned different addresses.

If you want to descend into router hell try setting up a Linksys WRT54GS wireless router to run off of a Westell 327W wireless router/DSL modem - been at it for three days and all I have is bleary eyes and no internet connection, along with several teenagers constantly asking "Is it working yet?!"  I'd almost rather be in Iraq :).

You can, but not with a router.   Ask Mazzeppa about his solution.

I used a Linksys NH105 Hub, and paid twelve bucks a month extra for two more IP's.  The hub has no firewall, but I use Zone Alarm on all my computers.  My son Malacoda and I played on two computers for quite some time, and almost always had solid connections.  Worked great.

Check with your provider Hexx, mine allows me two ip's for no additional cost. I can run two computers thru my switch, both playing op and it works great.
