I can't get OP to recognize my internet connection. I'm fully patched and running OP+ 4.0, and it worked at my girlfriend's cable internet last month but now refuses to work on my dial-up connection. I keep getting the firewall error message but my Windows firewall is turned off and so is zone alarm. Spybot is running, do I have to shut that off too?
-
a bump and an update:
I tried turning Zone Alarm off and I promptly got a virus that gave me long-winded dialog boxes in Spainish and wouldn't allow me to access Windows Task Manager, Zone Alarm, and Spybot. So after I rolled my system back to how it was 3 weeks ago using System Restore, I still have the problem of not being able to connect to the D2.
ANY help is sppreciated!

If you run the windows firewall and zonealarm within the same windows session your connection will be destabilised (I had this problem running a server behind both on a non-standard port, I could not see the server but the machine otherwise appeared connected, I uninstalled zonealarm, rebooted, problem gone...). This might be the issue? Spybot should not be necessary while playing sfc, so why not turn it off, free up the resources and eliminate it as the culprit?

turned off Spybot: no go
reinstalled windows: no go
windows firewall is off, and Zone Alarm is configured to allow SFC traffic.
I also have a problem where GameSpy doesn't work anymore either. Could the problems be connected?

If you have service pack 2 installed, try turning zone alarm off, and adding an exception to the windows firewall for OP. I use Win firewall and have no problems at all. Also have no problems with viruses, despite ppl always saying windows firewall is crap.
Zone alarm is decent (for a free firewall) but it has issues.

I have said it before and I will say it yet again. Firewalls don't protect you from viruses! They protect you from network intrusions. Get an anti-virus program such as AVG (http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5) and run a full system scan before you assume you have no problems with viruses.

I'm running service pack 1, and I've never ben able to get SFC to work through the Windows firewall.
I think something may have gotten control of my firewall so I think the Windows firewall only *says* it's off but it's really on.
I'm really at a loss as to why I can't get on. You might even say I'm stumped. The only thing I can think of is to move my Taldren folder, and everything else I need to the C: drive, and hard-format the H: drive (which is the one running the system), which until you guys tell me how to make it work, is my only option.

Check your TCP/IP filtering? (separate from the firewall)

Check your TCP/IP filtering? (separate from the firewall)
how?

I run anti-virus regularly, and yes that's true as far as firewalls not protecting you from viruses. I was actually referring to trojan intrusions and worms, which firewalls will protect you from. Yes I realise that the firewall may not prevent a torjan from being installed on your system, but only prevents access to it. I should have been more specific.
BTW, anyone else also use AVG? I dont, just wondering what ppl's opinions were. I have a few friends who swear by it, and a few who swear at it.
Although it can't be any wrse than Norton (which is horrible at detecting trojans)

That happens sometimes after doing a system restore for some reason. I found this out the other day doing a system restore myself to try to fix another problem. Hopefully you still have your OP cd. Just uninstall the game, then delete the folder it was installed in, restart the machine and reinstall. Should fix the problem.
Don't forget to delete the folder, other wise some of the files are left behind (the ini files I believe) and in that case, reinstalling may not fix it.
I got the exact same error after the restore, and 'clean installing' the game fixed it for me.
Hope it helps

Check your TCP/IP filtering? (separate from the firewall)
how?
"Start"..."Control Panel"..."Network Connections"... Right click "Local Area Connection" (in my case for cable)... Select "Properties"... Select "Internet Protocol TCP/IP"..."Properties" Button..."Advanced" Button..."Options" tab... Select "TCP/IP filtering... "Properties" button... check to see if enabled, if not cancel out.

Ok, so I've reinstalled Windows on my former H: drive (now redesignated C: ), after, of course, moving everything to the former C: drive (now redesignated D: ). Of course, it wouldv'e helped if I remembered which drive was 10 megs bigger than the other so that I wouldn't've had to guess after the installer switched my drive letters :P
AAAANYWAY....
I figure I had LOTS of viruses and spyware and various other crap running on my system since I now have 20 processes running when before the refresh it was over 40.
It should be able to get on the D2 now. I'll keep y'all posted how it turns out. :)

ok, it is fixed, and I can access the D2.
had to turn off the firewall though, so I'm gonna have to get ZoneAlarm back :(
It can wait till tomorrow.
