Title: Tomatoes and mosquitoes
Post by: NJAntman on July 18, 2005, 09:28:48 pm
Anyone know if tomato plants have something in them that repels mosquitoes?

Some much rain in our area the last few weeks that I can't walk five feet in my backyard without getting ripped by those damn little tiger mosquitoes. Yet when I get in between the waist high rows of the tomatoes in the garden the mosquitoes dissappear. Get near the garden fencing with only shin high plants and the bugs pick-up in intensity. All the plants have green fruit and are still flowering and there is that "musky" tomato plant smell.

Three Words:

Deep Woods Off..

If you want to go "organic" buy some "Skin so soft" from an Avon rep.  That stuff really repels them.

Just for the record I'm not planning on smearing myself with tomato products. Currently when I want to cut down on the critters I use the Cutter spray that attaches to a garden hose, seems to work for about 3-5 days straight.

But I figure if the tomatoes are warding off the mosquitoes then what better an excuse to plant even more next year.

Ah!  Citronella pots & candles work well if you're going to be outside in the yard for a while.

Excellent suggestion Dracho, SSS from Avon was THE sh*te to have in the U.S. when you were out in the field.

Garden Ridge has bamboo torches for .99 cents, the nice metal ones are $7.99, and they sell the Tiki fuel that is packed with citronella. I bought 3 today and they are the sh*te when it comes to clearing a large patio or yard of those pesky mosquitoes.

Tomato's are like marigolds they produce a ton of insect repelling and killing poisons. ( They are related to nightshade a very toxic plant.)

As a result of this they suffer from very few insect predators. And the few that do eat them are specialistists.and can eat nothing else.
