Indeed, today is a sad day. He too was among my favorites.
-
Same here, I believe Victory and AtamI are building Tribute ships to the man. I knew It was coming though, It just seemed strange having a world without my Favorite Scotch Drinking Rebel rouser. Very sad, very very sad.

Yeah I was lucky enough to see him at a con last year...frankly he looked pretty bad...He did get to attend a con in Las Vegas earlier this year which was supposed to be his last, and a tribute to him, so at least he went out in the lime light...

If we had a flag to represent this department of SFC ( enginering division) I would request it to be lowered to half staff ...
I too am very saddened at his passing.
respectfully ....
ATTENTION ON DECK !
<S>
farwell old friend !

I hear the Bagpipes from Star Trek II......
Yes ... Amazing Grace
-
When I first heard this I had the terrible feeling of shock & disbelief - you know when you go all hot & flustered and there's a lump in your throat?
I join everyone else, flag at half mast, amazing grace playing solemnly, but proudly as we say goodbye to a very well-loved man.

Hailing frequencies are closed.... :(

I can't say anything more than what had already been said, he was a great man and will be sorely missed.
R.I.P. James Montgomery Doohan "the craziest pilot in the Canadian Air Forces"

NNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I shall fire a 21 gun salute in SFC.
First it was Mark Lenard, then it was DeForest Kelley, then John Colicos, and now James Doohan. All of the good actors are dying off.
-
well me and few of m8s just drank a couple pints to his memory, seemed like the right thing to do ;/
-
Aye, lad, I've tipped the bottle in a sad farewell this evening as well.
Rest well now, Jimmy.
The lives you've touched with your works have insured that you will be with us always.
:'( z.
I, Mudd.

One can take comfort that he lived a full and rich life and was pretty much ready to go as the alzheimer's was getting advanced.
My belief is that he influnced the lives of more people thru his scotty role than any other actor in TV history.
-
dont mean to judge or anything but i think that those of us 'down in the engineering' (design, kitbash, model) took this the most hardly, since, well, he was the first of the kind. first person down in the ST engineering if i recall ;/
yeah yeah its nerdy sh*t i know but scotty was kind of like an idol in a way, without seeing him working there i propably never would have started to wonder "how the f*ck do the warp engines work anyways" and never began to try and design nacellas of my own and from there on the ships. ;p
this is propably the first time a death of a actor has touched me in any manner, a character dies with the actor :/
-
Yeah, i agree with you mackie, the engineering corps has really been hit hard by this.
-
Well, we've got a scottish Stargate Atlantis doctor, he seems just as good, but nobody can replace Scotty..... nobody.....
-
A sad good bye to one of the best loved characters in sci-fi, its fare to say. I wish him well on his true Final voyage. God's speed to him and those he left behind.
Amazing grace would be very apt for his passage.
-
How can we not be a bit sentimental over the passing of James 'Scotty' Doohan.
*********************
Let the pipes sound our lamentation...
"Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me....
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now, I see.
T'was Grace that taught...
my heart to fear.
And Grace, my fears relieved.
How precious did that Grace appear...
the hour I first believed.
Through many dangers, toils and snares...
we have already come.
T'was Grace that brought us safe thus far...
and Grace will lead us home.
The Lord has promised good to me...
His word my hope secures.
He will my shield and portion be...
as long as life endures.
When we've been here ten thousand years...
bright shining as the sun.
We've no less days to sing God's praise...
then when we've first begun.
"Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me....
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now, I see. (end)

Godspeed, James 'Scotty' Doohan

You the more I think of it the more it seems that his loss is something that truely is tragic. Some one should do a real tribute for him.. maybe rename a modeling forum to 'Scotty's Engineering Division' or something like that...
-
I found a pretty good bio of Scotty here: I didnt know his rank was Captain in WW2.
http://www.planetxpo.com/doohan/guests/
In Doohan we have the extremly rare or unique case of an actor exceeding the heroism of the character(s) he portrayed.
-
IMHO .. he love his job .. enjoyed being around those who loved watching the caractor on the screen .. and above all (from everything I could find) ..... remained a friendly and kind individual that we could all appreciate if we were to meet them in person.
I think a lot of actors fail to keep that personal touch as they gain popularity and fame.
I personally believe this attitude of his ... both on the screener and off ... helped make the charactor come to life as well as it did.
-
That is so right. Even without knowing of his past it was clear that both in character and not that he was a thoroughly decent human being. That bio is a must read... I never knew about his even more daring exploits in real life. Astonishing.

What acharacters were mark lenard and john colicos? The armiral who was arrested in undiscovered country is also dead is he not? (perhaps he is one of the 2 names I listed...)
-
Mark Lenerd played Romulan Commander in Balance of Terror and also Sarek; John Colicos played Klingon Commander Kor in Day of the Dove and also Boltar (sp?) in TOS Battlestar Galactica.

Mark Leonard played Ambassador Sarek, and John Colicos played Kor the first Klingon ever seen on Star Trek.
-
Mark Lenard also played the commander of the IKS Amar - the lead Klingon ship in ST:TMP thus making him the only actor ever to have portrayed all 3 main ST alien races (Vulcan, Romulan and Klingon) though obviously his Romulan and Klingon roles were only bit-parts.
Edit: I found this tribute someone put up on YTMND: http://ripmrscott.ytmnd.com/ it's got the bagpipes and everything, very moving.
