Exceprted from the original Star Trek episode "I, Mudd"
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
SCOTTY: Ooooohaaaiiieeee! Ah canna go on! Ah'm tired of happiness! Ah'm tired of comfort and pleasure! Ah'm ready. Kill me...KILL ME!

(landing party points fingers like guns and whistles as if phasers are being fired)

SCOTTY: Good bye, cold universe.

(with fingers still pointed, landing party whistles again)

BONES: He's dead.

KIRK: Scotty! Scotty's dead! He had too much happiness, but now he's happier; he's dead. And we'll miss him. Let us hear it for our poor dead friend!

(landing party laughs raucously)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rest in peace, Jimmy Doohan.

In many ways, Scotty was the best of the bunch.  His character was always a personal favorite of mine, and probably inspired my decision to become an aerospace engineer.

I'm really going to miss knowing that James Doohan is around.

Kirk: Scotty. You were supposed to stay out of trouble.

Scott: Aye, sir.

Kirk: Who did it, Scotty?

Scott: Umm... *looks down* I did, Captain...

Kirk: You did, Mr. Scott?

Scott: Aye...

Kirk: You... threw... the first punch...

Scott: Aye. Chekov wanted to, Sir, but I held him back!

Kirk: You held him b--- Why did Chekov want to start a fight?

Scott: Well sir, umm... Is this off the record?

Kirk: No, this isn't off the record!

Scott: Well, sir. They called you a... tin-plated, overbearing, swaggering dictator with... delusions of God-hood...

Kirk: Was that all?

Scott: No, sir! They also compared you to a denebian slime devil!

Kirk: I see...

Scott: And then they said---

Kirk: I get the picture, Scotty!

Scott: Aye...

Kirk: And... that's when you hit the Klingons.

Scott: No, sir.

Kirk: No?

Scott: No, uh... Well, you told us to stay out of trouble... and after all, we are big enough to take a few insults... aren't we?

Kirk: What was it that started the fight?

Scott: They called the Enterprise a "Garbage Scow!!!" ... Sir.

Kirk: And... that's when you hit the Klingons.

Scott: Yes, sir!

Kirk: You hit the Klingons... because they insulted the Enterprise... Not because they insulted---

Scott: Well, sir! This was a matter or pride!

I loved the scotch drinking engineer.

James Doohan was best known to Star Trek fans as Scotty ("Montgomery Scott"), the chief engineer aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise, in the original Star Trek series.
Doohan was born on March 3, 1920, in Vancouver, British Columbia, and spent his early years in there and in Sarnia, Ontario. Surviving the anguish of living with an alcoholic father, he left home at age 19 to join the Canadian Forces, fighting with the Allies in World War II. After outscoring his fellow soldiers on an officer's exam, he became Captain in the Royal Canadian Artillery. While leading his men into battle on D-Day, Doohan was wounded in the leg and hand, and eventually lost a finger. For the remainder of the war, he became a pilot observer, and received the dubious distinction of being called the "craziest pilot in the Canadian Air Forces."

After returning home to Canada, Doohan performed a few scenes for the local radio station, and was awarded a two-year scholarship to the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City. Beginning in 1946, he trained at the Playhouse with Sanford Meisner, alongside such future stars as Leslie Nielsen, Tony Randall and Jackie Gleason.

In the ensuing eight years, Doohan shuttled between New York and Canada where he worked on 4000 radio programs, 400 live and taped variety and dramatic television shows, several films and plays. Though he became known as Canada's busiest actor, he eventually found himself following other fellow actors in the pilgrimage to Hollywood. There, his versatility and talent as a dialectician helped him earn parts in more than 100 motion pictures and television series, including The Twilight Zone, Outer Limits, Fantasy Island, "Loaded Weapon 1" and "Double Trouble." He has also appeared in the first seven Star Trek motion pictures.

In the years since the final episode of Star Trek, Doohan has pursued a speaking career which has taken him to more than 250 colleges throughout the U.S. and Canada. In addition, he makes appearances at numerous Star Trek conventions.

Doohan lived in Redmond, Washington, with his wife Wende and his sons, Eric and Thomas. In April 2000, James and Wende gave birth to another child, Sarah.

James Doohan passed away on July 20, 2005 at his home. Wende, his wife of 28 years, was at his side.

A good man who lived a full life. A vetern, all of whom earn my eternal respect and gratitude.

DH, as much as we may rag on Canada here at times, let it be remembered that of all the soldiers on the battlefield in WWII, the Germans were most terrified of "die verückten Canadier" (the crazy Canadians).

Heh, don't get me started you Jersey white-fish.
Too late...
We had our own beach on D-Day.
Over  1 million Canadians (notice the spelling) were in uniform during WW2... not bad for a population of 11 million.
We had the 4th biggest navy at the end of the war, even had a couple carriers for a bit.
The second battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry is the only forgien unit (afaik) to get the American Presidential Unit Citation for actions in Korea... they held the line when the Yankee's and Korean's bolted and the Aussies got wiped out. (little rusty on that one).
Different country now, not to disparage our current troops (was one not too long ago) but this peacekeeper crap has taken hold of our politicians.
Eh, end of rant, much more to say but "youse jus' an' ignant American" and I don't want to overload you.

Oh, don't want this moved to hot and spicy so....
Star Trek Rules!

Very good point Sky. Why the hell would you have a kid when they will be getting out of diapers when you start wearing them.

Come on you puffed up piece of Yankee crap.... no response? Your nation has a rich military history and many brave hero's were rewarded for their actions. What, you don't even know your history? Jesus, and you are supposed to be one of them "God fearing Americans, Stars and Stripes do or die!"

Let me get some American heros for you:
Audie Murphy (my favorite, his life mirrors Tommy Prince, a Canadian soldiers soldier)
Sgt. York
Cpt Francis Wai
Eddie Richenbacker
Pat Tillman- killed by friendly fire (something us Canadians know about) but he gave up an NFL career to serve his country... an ethic that is unheard of in this day and age.

Oh, Star Trek rocks... Spock is god!

Your right Jinn, he was a cool guy, and very tolerant of dumb fans who would invade his privacy in public... (raises hand)

Went to a convention bout 4 hours away cause SCOTTY was gonna be there, and I had never seen him. Satellite Beach, Fl. He mentioned a bar near by where they had a drink named after him, the "beam me up Scotty". It was god awful, had 2 kinds of dis-gusting liquor mixed together that seperated into 2 seperate layers in the glass and they mixed and looked ALOT like the TOS beaming effect when you took the shot.

Anyways, he showed up there after we did and sat behind me and my wife. He proceeded to live up to his character and polish off several bottles of wine with his friend over dinner. We stood up and just STARED like idiots. He sighed, then turned to us and said hi. When he heard we drove 30 miles just to visit the bar he mentioned, he perked up and talked to us for a good 10 minutes. This was back in the early-mid ninties.

Great guy, sorry to see em go, and glad I got to meet him at least once.

On the other hand, the ONE time I saw Shatner, he was a dickhead. The only cast member of ANY of the series I have seen that wouldnt take a pic with you, shake your hand, or even say anything other than "Hi".

Kirk rocks, Willy Slapner is a jerkoff.

Now we can all just breathe a bit easier, knowing that McCoy's ol' drinking buddy has finally pulled up a stool at St. Peters Bar and Grill.

Quote
At 19, James escaped the turmoil at home by joining the Canadian army, becoming a lieutenant in artillery. He was among the Canadian forces that landed on Juno Beach on D-Day. "The sea was rough," he recalled. "We were more afraid of drowning than the Germans."

The Canadians crossed a minefield laid for tanks; the soldiers weren't heavy enough to detonate the bombs. At 11:30 that night, he was machine-gunned, taking six hits: one that took off his middle right finger (he managed to hide the missing finger on screen), four in his leg and one in the chest. Fortunately the chest bullet was stopped by his silver cigarette case.

I've got to watch that scene again, and several more I can think of with Doohan either cradling a bottle or working with tools.  I can't believe I never noticed he was missing a finger.

Taking six hits from a German machine gun on D-Day and not letting it slow you down is one hell of an accomplishment.  He didn't "use" it either.  I have never heard this story before, despite reading several fan publications on Trek.

They don't make many like that anymore.
