Title: BC Conversion questions
Post by: Darkseid on September 13, 2005, 04:24:25 pm
I was cruising around the Bridge Commander forums when I found this http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~bridgecommander/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=20479&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

The posted images got me thinking.  These are of the CG Sovereign 1.0 but they look nothing like 1.0 converted to SFC.  I did make modifications to the SFC converted one and it can be found at the Battleclinic, but is it possible to convert this over and have it look like the one in the image?

I don't have any real expirence but I beileve it is possible.  Whether or not the computer playing SFC will be able to handel the model is a different story.  I don't have any advice to give you but I'm sure someone will come along shortly that can.

in what way does it look nothing like it? Perhaps it's just the difference of engine, or perhaps the texture res was reduced?

Well the resolution could always use an update but look at this image from the BC version.  The SFC version is Blue.

He is right - the blue one is the one that he made before the "Version 1" model that is now used throughout BC - he's making the V2 one still now - apparently for about a year.

If a computer can handle the BC model in BC, it should be able to handle that model in SFC - granted the game engines are different, but you still need a relatively decent PC to play with that model in BC.

The only program that can import NIF (BC Model format) is Millkshape with the NIF plugins - I have never tried though.

I've done it before.  Converting ships from BC to SFC3 in Milkshape is relatively easy.  Just be sure you also convert the textures from targa (.tga) to bitmap (.bmp) files also.

has anyone checked the mapping? Perhaps the new textures can be placed on the blue saucer with no nif coversion nessecary?

It's still better to just do the conversion.

Well, FYI, CG amde a post within the last few days saying 2.0 will be ready soon. I will ask him for the original files for sfc, and if he is ok with it I'll give it to MP or Alec or whom ever can do the modding...

Sweet!  It would probably be better to wait for the 2.0 if it's going to come out soon.  Of course it has been close to coming out for a couple years now.  But then again, good things come to those who wait ;D

Works for me... I'll also swing over to one of the BC sites and see if I can backconvert a BC mesh and textures back to SFC, it's been a while.  :)
