Title: MS Config Question
Post by: Corbomite on September 25, 2005, 11:15:55 pm
When you run MS Config and click the Start Up tab, you get a list of things that can be or do get loaded at Start Up. If you un-check a box, that program (most times) will not load up. If you delete that program the entry remains. My question is - Is there a way to delete the entries you know are no longer on your machine?

Did you do a add/remove of the program, restart, then check the config?

No, I either deleted it at the source in Programs/Windows or deleted it by right clicking on it after using the Find function. I don't even know where Add/Remove Programs is. I have stuff still in there that I deleted years ago.

What OS are you using?

If you have winXP just go to Start-->Control Panel-->Add or Remove Programs. There you will pro'ly find programs you deleted months, or even years ago still listed because their registry edit was not properly removed. Try removing the programs (or what is left of them) through the Add or Remove Programs interface and see what happens.

I'm still on 98SE. Its an old box. The items are not listed there (in Add/Remove). The stuff I want to delete in the Start Up list are things that some malware put on my machine. I'm sure the program is gone beacause it isn't renaming and reloading itself anymore. Some examples are:

KB891711

SDKTQ.EXE

and

ADDNC.EXE

The only thing I can think of is Removing all calls in the registry. Just be very carefull, as you can destroy your operating system if you that. The simplest way is of course RegEdit from start ---> run.

Then do a search for KB891711. Delete it, and then find next. Repeat for each referance to KB891711. You should be able to do the same for the other programs. I'm not sure If this will work but It's worth a shot. Once again, If your not familier with the registry, don't do this at all, as you can really muck up your OS with just one wrong move.

Outside of that, and following ToastyO's idea, you can try to re-install the programs , and then Do the add remove from the control panel. That might do everything automaticly, and It's alot easier.
