so i have a dell system that im retiring for my spanking new amd system, I can't find someone to sell it to, so I figure why not take the os.
I was wondering if I obtain a copy (a "backup") in whatever fashion I choose.
and use a LEGAL cd key, from the dell machine would it
a: be legal to use the possiby warez xp version, with a legal cd
b: would the dell xp cd key work with a regular version of xp?
-
IIRC the key wont work because its for a different version of XP.
The key is only legal for use on that 1 dell box.
I could be mistaken tho...
-
I know that the dell xp cd wont work because its made for dell machines only, im hoping the actual cdkey isnt specifically made for JUST adell.
-
No, the CD key will be sepcificaly for that version of XP. (do they call it OEM?)
I always wipe the comps that come pre-installed and start fresh, they are usualy badly setup anyway.
-
damnit, I was hoping that I wouldnt have to go out and buy anothe rcopy of xp, sigh.
anyone know some good prices?
i know the cd wont work, its a dell specific cd.

I say try, and I would activate via the phone, it is at least worth an attempt. If they activate XP its their problem right? If they ask the reason your reactivating just say "hardware change".
This might also help you taken from Tech Republic:
1. Edit the registry of the illegal machine.
2. Use Regedit and find:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current Version\WPAEvents
3. In the right pane, right-click the ODBETimer binary value and select Modify. Change at least one character of this value to either a number from 0 to 9 or to a letter from A to F, and then click OK and close the Registry Editor. This renders the current product key invalid and deactivates Windows.
4. Reactivate Windows using your new product key.
5. Click Start | Run and enter the command: %systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe /a
6. Windows will launch the Product Activation Wizard.
7. Select the option to telephone a Microsoft customer service representative to activate Windows.
8. Select the Change Product Key option and enter your new product key.
9. Click Update and close the window.
10. If Windows returns you to the previous screen, just select the Remind Me Later option. When the wizard is finished, reboot the system.
11. When Windows reboots, your next step will depend on which Windows XP version you are using. If you have XP Home or Professional, you’ll be prompted to reactivate your copy of Windows through the normal activation process. If you have XP Corporate, no activation is required and your machine should have a valid product ID.

Toasty also has a thread below that could help also.

I agree, and I did. The prices for the OS should all be about the same, might be able to save a couple of bucks at Newegg though.

Ah windows XP corperate... How I love thee :)
-
yeah i work tech at my job, and i COULD get cd keys...they do have hundreds of licences...but i figured that might be a tab bit illegal...

Who needs CD keys... Corperate owns :D
-
we actually dont have corp. edition.
but we do have pro/home

Corp edition is Pro. Just it doesnt need activation/cd key when you install it.
