Title: Been thinking about the game
Post by: OlBuzzard on October 13, 2005, 11:40:56 am
I have only a couple of projects (okie ...  maybe more like 3 or 4 ) to finish up in the modeling area I've been working on and I've been looking at maybe comming back.

However, I have also been looking at doing so only if I can get rid of the old Phone Age dial-up.  IMHO ...  the individual game is over before you know what's happening on dial-up.

I have also noted that there seems to be an unending number of problems with SFC and cable and or DSL.  Seemingly DSL is a big problem.  (Which for my purposes DSL is the better way to go).  That said, could someone please shed some light on this matter.

One way or another the old dial-up MUST go ...  (long over due the truth be known).

please advise:

thanks

I played on DSL for a while and didn't have any problems, it was business grade though, so it was slightly higher bandwidth than normal DSL.

Nice to hear your thinking about coming back though Buzz.  I'll have someone go warm up the chair for you ;)

SFC doesn't have a problem with Cable / DSL itself, actually, SFC enjoys the higher speeds (less lag etc...).  There are many people in this community that connect with either one of the 2 methods.

SFC does have problems with some of the associated technologies that work with high-speed connections.  SFC seems shaky when played through a software firewall, and cannot play through a router / hardware firewall without "significant" work, ie, forwarding certain ports to the gaming PC or putting that computer on the "DMZ", which effectively opens all the ports.

Myself, I have a cable modem, and a router.  It wasn't intuitive, but I managed to get the DMZ feature working on my setup, and so far, I've only ran into "connection issues" with 32nd_Shin.  There are enough of us out here that would be more than willing to do what we can to help you if you run into problems, just time the problems to occur during a test server for best results... :D  (ie, no frustration from not playing on the main game, but enough techies around to post...)

okie ...   this sounds promissing.

If anyone else can add to this  (and suggested methods of hook ups with the least hassle and least likely to be suspect to virus, and or other problems) ...  again ..  please advise.

(BTW...  thanks bud for the input .. it IS appreciated !)

Im getting rid of my dsl because it wont let me connect  to other players in game. I can log on and play it like single player but when i try to get some one else or they try to get me its a no go. I dont think the problem is dsl itself but those combined modem routers. I put my router in dmz and fowarded all of my ports as instructed no dice. Finaly I talked to the tech people they said i need to change my service more money get a static adress more money  and to top it off the have no email or any thing  with their service.Would cost just as much as cable after it done. Im going with cable next week and guess what  i wont need to get a static ip ill have email and many more services like web space for a web page and other things.
You might ask the people before getting dsl if they have any problems  with people playing on game spy. Since everything still goes thru them in a fassion.
Hope this helps bud and hope to see you soon. It will be nice to fly with or aginst you once again.

thanks for the input ...  I would like to keep my little web site too ...  that is how I remote host the picts I post.  Even though I do a lot of TNG and late TNG stuff  ( things that don't matter to OP )   I still plan on keeping that active.  I love to model.  Right now AV and I are finishing up a re-make of the Yamamoto and another BB yet to be shared ( a rare TMP model for me .....   but it's fun just the same).  That all translates into things I need to consider when making the change over.

I use dsl for several years now and got no problems at all.
One thing you must make sure though is, that your Dsl account has fast page enabled.
Some isp run it with verfy option enabled which gives you a bad latency.
So make sure  to explicit mention that issue.
Some isps offer a specific GAmers version of Dsl, which is  just not running that friggin protocol and they charge another 10 bucks for it or so...,like the friggin telecom did over here.
Funny is, before some users told them to disable  the veryfy option and they did it for free,  then they said they cant do it anymore and half a year later, they charged money for uncheking that box. tss.

I've used DSL for about 3 years now with no problems.

One thing I have to do that is strange though is that I have to "Log-in" to my ISP before I can connect to the D2 login screen.  When my computer first boots, I have my "Always on" connection (which I'm on now).  I will get the "firewall detected" message on the D2 login of I do not click my ISP software icon on my desktop (EarthLink).  It then brings up a connect box which then gives me another IP address.  Once logged into my ISP, I can get into D2....  weird, but it works  ;)

I've had DSL for a couple of years now thru SBC....And no problems what so ever !!  (knock on wood)

I just have to remember to turn the Dam firewall off so I can log on....   ;)

Glad your seriously considering coming back Bud !!!    ;D

I deeply appreciate the input.  Thanks guys.

It appears that there are two main conclusions that we have to review:

1.  Wheather or not I can get the free web-site stuff like I do with my current ISP. ( the cable company DEFINITELY does).

2.  Successfully playing the game w/o out issues in PvP stems from additional firewall programs that were used for a number of things (most of which stem from security related items).  For that matter there are issues there with "XP" since day one when it was released.  Some of the newer games will pop up a message box that will allow you to "turn off" or "disable" those security protocols in "XP" automatically.  Due to the age of OP ... it is something you simply have to do manually.

I will know more in a few weeks what we are going to do ...  I AM SURE I'll be in touch when we make the change over !

again ...  thanks.

(if there is anything else you can think of ...  feel free to continue the discussion ...  I can always use the help!)

thanks.

I have BellSouth DSL and BEFSR41 LinkSys router,  and I had a lot of problems connecting with players in AOTK2.  However, last night I completely disabled my Windows Software Firewall service like Frey posted, even though I had already turned it off before, and suddenly I was connecting with people like Warp, 762, Max Sterling, and Hexx.  It's a little early to tell, but I might be onto something here.

Thanks guys ....

Looks like more reading ...  and tech-no-babble stuff ....  Hey Karnak ..  BUD  I may have to get on MSN in a few weeks just before we make the change over and walk through this stuff togeather!  (  If ya dont mind ) ..

As for my return to SFC ...  I will be returning as an independent pilot  ( a rogue of sorts) ... but will try to offer some help as needed in the few hours a week we have available.

LOL ....

Besides   ....

I figured you guys needed someone for "comic relief" !

Running Cable here, through a switch, with 2 systems, each with seperate IPs.  No problems at all.  Only thing I ever really had to do was after installing and running OP for the first time with this setup, was make a "hole" in the firewall for this game, so that I may play online and host.  My system happens to be set up to actually ask me everytime a new program runs to see if I want to allow outside connections to that program.  Not sure how come it runs this way, but it does, and works.

It does seem however that Switches are much more game friendly than routers.
