some time ago i attempted to learn how to model using milkshape. at the time there was not much help to be had and i shelved the project for a while. Now I'm asking anyone to make a rough model of a solar sail powered ship. the concept is basically the same general shape as a klingon vorcha except the wings are on articulated pivots and have extended masts instead of warp nacelles. each wing has two sails that form a wedge sector of a circular over all sail. maybe with a set of pairs steering sails set perpendicular to the plane of the main sail the details on the boom section and forward hull don't need to exactly duplicate a vorcha that is just the over all shape i want.

I have a solar sail model. Needs better textures though

could you post a screen shot or two? ;D
-
Here ya go ...............
-
Where? Where?
-
There, there lol

Ah, I see it now. it did not show up at first. it looks pretty good. and 2 of the sails look like what i had in mind. but yours is a much smaller ship than i had in mind. yours is a yacht or frigate sized craft. i had in mind a cruiser sized critter. ;D

Great I look forward to it Buzz

okay, im bored enough, maybe i will play with the idea myself.

DUDE, I can hook you up!
Post your e-mail address and I will try to get it out to you!

Now that's interesting. Hook us all up and post this bad boy somewhere we can all D/L it ;)

Nice!

Hey MP .. did you still want me to retext ...?
-
Lets see if I can post it here.
For sailing ship:
Please mess with this all you want, but if you post it anywhere, I need credit for it. This is a work in progress.
Thanks for your consideration.
Ship info:
The ship works on the theory that light has a matter componant to it, namely protons. Up untill this design, it was thought that a sailing ship could only sail away from a star. Now, with the Hyper Moment Drive (HMD) mounted on the back of the ship, the ship is able to tack at as little as 45 degrees close to the solar wind. Not as efficient as most wind driven ships on a terrestrial plane, but a good start.
Like I said, I need credit for this one if it is posted anywhere else, it is a small part of a much bigger project. Consider it a community exclusive :)

what about a Giant mirror?
-
I think a mirror is a good idea, but I am having a hard time thinking of a way to make it look cool. I wish I were more creative, maybe if I made the sails mirrors. Any ideas on how I would simulate a mirror using the limited SFC environment?
-
i dont think you can with SFC - no reflections, or anything, and without reflections, it would look like a giant flat thing.
But if it were for rendering pruposes only, in order to make it look cool, i would make it Hex-shaped.

Nice! for informational purposes solar sail ships can tack the wind and solar wind works off of photon pressure. photons are masslesss in a classical sense but because they carry energy they have a type of pressure of thier own. however sail ship speed can be augmented with active power beamed onto the sail from a projector. it can also be augmented by putting an ablative paint coating on the sail. this effectively multiplies the sail's wind many many times.

Heck yeah Buzz

Well, this took me about all day yesterday (and most of last night) but the result is fun to play. I have been toying with solar sail ship ideas for a long time but I could never think up a hull that looked both nautical and feasible for space travel. The other day I found a great site where someone had done a bunch of Space Battleship Yamato universe ships. I studied the style and was able to fabricate a hull using similar principles. And for those of you who have encouraged me to do higher quality models, you will be pleased to know that this one stands at 2161 Polygons and has 2 textures, one 512 X 512 with alpha for transparency and the other 1024 X 1024 (a step up from my normal single 512 X 512).

That's fantastic! :o
