Title: Speculations of Apple going the way of the clone again.
Post by: Javora on November 06, 2005, 04:46:16 pm
I just found this article over at ZD Net (http://news.zdnet.com/2100-9584_22-5933419.html) talking about rumors of Apple clones making a comeback since Jobs announced that Apple was moving to Intel processors.  The article is written by a admitted Mac fan but makes some good points.  A few things about the article that caught my eye were:

Quote
Apple has flatly denied that the imminent shift to Intel chips heralds a longer term strategy to license its operating system to PC manufacturers.

and

Adding further spice to the speculation, Steve Jobs claimed earlier this year that three major PC manufactures had already approached him regarding the licensing of the Apple OS.

But then Apple flatly denied this as well:

Quote
At the time of the Intel announcement in June, Apple admitted it has been porting OS X to Intel since day one.

Then there is this quote:

Quote
Does this indicate a cautious approach to platform deployment or point to a longer-term strategy?

Hmmm, does it?  Actually I think it does, I think that Jobs is looking at how well the Ipods are doing setting on store shelves and think the same can be done for Mac OS X.  I guessing the real problem is getting over Apples (and Jobs) ego that the best operating system can only perform on the best hardware.  News flash for you Jobs Apple hardware hasn't been near good let alone the best in years.  Moving to the Intel processor alone isn't going to change that.

He might consider that a fast Pentium can perform the calculations of a legacy SuperComputer of the original Apple era.

If Jobs only thinks that much of the Pentium then he needs to get back out of the computer business and let someone capable handle that part of Apple.

Were the Mac clones not cancelled once Jobs was back in charge?  If so then it would seem unlikely that either Jobs would do it or that companies would trust him not to back out again.  I do wish that Apple would allow the cloning though.

if nothing else it would help to drive down prices. That alone would help sales.
