Title: Hd Crash
Post by: The Postman on November 29, 2005, 06:22:37 pm
On Sunday, my 2 year old helped 5 year build of WIN2K to crash. :'( I hope to be up and running by the weekend. Until then I will be off the air.

Hopefully it is nothing too severe.

Well, it looks as if you are getting up sooner than anticipated.  Hope that's indicative that it's going well on the recovery.  Sorry about the two year old crashing the machine.  Hope he/she was cute doing it though!

Thanks Stephen, I am all set. I had a 60 gig lying around doing nothing. I slaved the other drive to this new one. This way I can recover files as I get a chance. As for what happened, I am not sure. I used it at noon and everything was fine. I went back around 5 PM and it was locked up so that neither the mouse nor the keyboard would respond. My 2 year old was playing Taldren's Space Hunt in between these 2 times. Reboot. BIG MISTAKE! When it came back up, it was just as if the entire driver cache had been deleted.Nothing worked. I could not reinstall any drivers. Nothing I could do would work. So rather than fuss with it, I just stuck a copy of XP Pro on the new drive and I am trying to get a full recovery. As I said above, This build of 2K was almost 5 years old and was running just fine until this happened. Oh Well.

A new HD/New install is what i usually do if an older install of windows goes wonky.  Grab the data off the old HD, back it up on the new/burn to media; nuke old drive, new install on that in a diff PC (or nuke the old drive, and keep it in as a 2nd/3rd/4th HD data dump).

In the 2 main computers on my network; one has 4 drives on it, 200gb data, 80gb system, 60gb data, 80gb external; the other has 2.  120gb system, 200gb data
