First of all, my apologies on not delivering the story I promised earlier. I just couldn't get motivated to write it, and I wasn't quite sure why. After all, I thought I was having some good ideas, and I thought I was eager to get started. However, after a talk with La'ra, I think I found out what the problem really is. I think I'm just burnt out on writing Trek stories, to make a long story short. So, I'm going to try something new.
I'm writing a story set in the Honorverse, with Kieran a destroyer captain in the People's Navy. Hopefully, that will get me back into writing again, and give me something different enough and interesting enough that I'll stick with it. I've got almost enough for a post at this point; expect something soon, as soon as my schedule permits.

Ever read an Honor Harrington novel Grim?

nope, doesn't ring a bell.

Pretty cool universe created by David Weber. In my opinion, the first book is great, while the sequels grow increasingly less tolerable due to chronic munchkinism and some serious bogging down in political and technical minutae.
The short story anthologies avoid that and let some other authors play with the ideas and settings, and all of those I recommend.
Either way, while I sometimes have trouble with Weber's storytelling, the universe he's created is pretty awesome, with extremely detailed technology, worlds, etc. Kieran's character is a captain in the fleet of the folks who are the usual antagonists, though in the more recent books, they're sometimes more likable than the folks on Honor's side.
Looking up 'Honor Harrington' or 'Honorverse' on Wikipedia should net some valuable info, and I think the first few books are available for free online.

wiki has some cool info thx. I'm still missing pic though. Gonna hunt for them later...
edit
found them. They are very ugly imho. Star Wars ships fit better. Or bab5 (esp EA). Still doesn't change that the universe has potential. I'll read it k-fo. lemme know when your posting.

The setting is full of references to the Age of Sail. The technology of the setting's warships is very reminiscent of old-style sailing ships; huge, pondering, cylindrical warships with most of their armament in broadside arrangements. They may not be pretty, but the design makes sense when you take into account how the technology works. The two main nations are also futuristic adaptations of Imperial Age nations. The Star Kingdom of Manticore is analogous to the British Empire of Wellington's day, while the People's Republic of Haven at the start of the first Honorverse novel is quite similar to France prior to the French Revolution. Hereditary President Harris(Louis XVI) is deposed over the course of the third book, replaced by the Committee of Public Safety and its Chairman, Rob S. Pierre.(No coincidences there, I assure you. ;) )
Kieran(It just wouldn't be one of my stories unless the main character was named Kieran Forester :) ) is a destroyer captain in the pre-Pierre coup People's Navy. This hopefully will only be the first of a series of stories that run concurrently with the events in the novels, showing how Kieran fares through the Pierre coup and the reign of the Committee. I think the first few books are available, as La'ra said, on the Baen free library at www.baen.com (http://www.baen.com). I definitely recommend reading them, if only to get a feel for the universe and some background knowledge which will be very helpful when reading my story. ;) I hope to have enough to post within a week or so at the latest.

I'm definitely up for this. I've often almost bought Honor novels, and I did read a few of the Hope novels (Midshipman Hope, Lieutenant Hope, all that). I think I'll start readingthem again. Give me a break from Trek novels, though the latest ones have been pretty good. 'Star Trek: Vanguard' is a great read. Sold me on it in the first 2 pages with the intro featuring Commodore Decker on the Constellation.
Lay it on us, K-Fo!

Far from it for me to make excuses or anything... ;)
I know I said about a week ago I'd have the first part ready in a week, but I counted on having time this weekend that I did not have because I forgot I had reserve duty for this month on this particular weekend. So... I'll do what I can during the week, but seeing as how I need to concentrate on studying more and starting on a workout regimen, it will probably have to wait until this weekend before much work gets done.
Hey... at least it's a better excuse than "I couldn't get motivated". ;D
