I'm looking to reduce the temp for my CPU without too much hassle. I've added fans and other basics, but the CPU sometimes gets hot (running SFC OP). The CPU is a Prescott Pentium 4, 2.8 Ghz, with a socket 478 Mobo. I currently have a standard heatsink and fan on the CPU.
I'm considering changing the heatsink and fan to a Zalman CNPS 9500 LED. It's a bit of coin ($70), but I've read some good reviews about it. Has anyone here used this heatsink or other Zalman heatsinks? If so, your thoughts on it would be appreciated.
Any thoughts on this heatsink, or other ways to keep the CPU cool (without moving to Wisconsin) would be appreciated.

I use an all copper HSF. (heatsink & fan) 92mm fan. I will give you the name of it later
I am running a P4 Prescot E 3.0 Gig and it running just fine w/ 3 80mm fans and the PSU fans
and it runs cool. just need to check for airflow.

I have the same processor that you have Carrson and I use a heat sink from a company called SwifTech (http://www.swiftnets.com/), I don't believe that my CPU ever climbed above 35C. You should be able to find the heat sink at FrozenCPU.com (http://www.frozencpu.com/scan/se=CPU%20Cooling/se=Swiftech/mp=menu_search.html) although you may have to call them to order the part for your machine. On the other hand the Zelman from everything I have read will serve you just as well. Hope this helps.

Wow! 35 C would be great. It seems as if I start to have some problems once I get much above 52 C. I'm hoping to keep it below 45 C. Thanks guys.

With temps that high I would also be a little concerned with the case air flow. Even a stock cooler should keep the CPU temp. lower than that. What fans are you running and able to run in the front and back of your case??

my case has good airflow(4 fans, 2 rear, one blowing onto the CPU, one on the front) and had a stock fan, and i had over heating issues. Even w/ the best of airflow this happens. Can't remember the name of my heat sink now, but i used a cooler master impellor type fan, my idle temp went from 45*C to 35*C, under load went from 65*c (note gaming) to 45-50*c(depent on room temperature). I can't gurantee that you'll get the same results as me, but i can say a good heat sink/fan combo will help you alot.

I haven't played around much with alternative cooling or heat sinks, I've stuck with stock models. Last spring however I had a system that I gave to a friend returned with "problems", he reported it as overheating (it wasn't, he had never run a defrag on it). While checking the reported heat problems I noticed the fan was odd sounding and checked it in the BIOS, the RPMs were at about 1/3 of comparable fans on my other systems. I swapped the fan with a spare heat sink and the RPMs went back to normal and the chip cooled off. So if you are having heat problems one thing to check is your fan RPMs vs what it is rated at.

I'm going to give a new copper heat sink and fan a try, and I'll let you guys know the outcome once I get it and make the change. Thanks.

I use a Thermaltake subzeroIV peltier effect thermo electric cooler with independent intelligent controller and power supply. The intelligent controller ensures that the cooler unit does not cool it below the condensation point or even freeze as it is capable of doing. biggest problems are it takes up a card slot and the power cord may come loose leaving your CPU with just a heatsink.

The change appears to be a huge success. I switched heat sink and fan (stock Intel for a Zalman CNPS 9500 LED). That's one pretty big baby!
After 3 days of use, it's consistently lowered the CPU temp by at least 8 degrees Celcius. The computer used to lock up pretty frequently playing SFC OP, and hasn't locked up once since the change.
I'll keep you guys informed.
