Title: Software help
Post by: Storvick_XC on May 15, 2006, 09:18:27 pm
    When updateing Windows there was a program installed that is a search engine. The bloody thing keeps poping up when I don't want it to and I can't get eh thing uninstalled. Here is what they say to do in their FAQ for uninstalling:

Uninstall is very simple.  It's done through Windows' Add/Rremove Control Panel.  Go to your Start Menu>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs. When you have the Add/Remove Control Panel open, scroll down the list of installed programs until you see "TwikiBar."  Select it by clicking on it and then click "Change/Remove."  It should remove the program all together.  If you still see the toolbar on your desktop, or any other TwikiBar files remaining on your hard drive, please contact us.

Problem is there is no program listed there as TwikiBar to uninstall but the program keeps poping up (Clean Sweep and Spyware Sweeps can't get rid of it.)

How can I get rid of this bloody thing?

Hmm. Never heard of it. But here's what I would do, I'd do a full search for twikibar via start -Search- etc.

Remove every instance of it. then , I'd go into regedit, and do a search there. However, Let me see what I can find, as I hate telling people to go into there registry.

Hmm, I found this, but not much info on it. http://twiki.softwarelivre.org/bin/view/TWiki/UsingBuildContribAndTWikiShell and the same thing you mentioned here... http://twikibar.com/faq.html

I'd try to contact them via email first before digging around your your regestry.

Whats the name of this program?  You didn't post the name of the program so I not going to give advice that may make things worse.  I will say however that this doesn't sound like any windows update that I know of and it sounds like you came upon a nasty bit of spyware.  If you can give me the name of the program and where you found it I may be able to help.

If you haven't already, you may wish to consider downloading SpyBot Seach and Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html).  It's pretty good at finding spyware/malware and cleaning it.

Microsoft/Windows Update didn't install that.

Ad-Aware, Hijackthis, or maybe even Spybot (as suggested above) will probably remove it for you.

The Microsoft antispyware beta, now called Microsoft Defender, is pretty good at finding stuff too, if you let it do a full scan.  You can d/l it from MS's site, I guess.

I like MS Antispyware beta.  We use it at work as it's a bit quicker than running spybot + adaware.

Not sold on the whole defender bit (it does more than MS ASW); but will work just fine.

Need to be running 'genuine' XP (dont know if 2k checks) to download it from MS.
