From Trek Web (http://trekweb.com/articles/2006/06/21/Matt-Damon-as-James-T-Kirk.shtml)
I liked him in the Bourne movies, but is an established, big-ticket name the way to go in casting?
-
I think it could be. Let's face it Trek alone isn't getting people in the seats anymore, especially after the insulting offerings that they were giving. Even the fans of Trek aren't going, so what do you do? I think they believe that if they cast known entities then that will help fill the seats. I just hope that the movie is worth it and they aren't just going with the same old, same old, and throwing names in the mix. Frankly, I don't think I'd mind Damon as Kirk, if done right. Sure he's not going to be like the original, but he might be able to pull it off.
-
Matt Damon as the "young Kirk"?
This doesn't work. Matt Damon is currenly 36. William Shatner was only 35 when he began the role of Kirk. He might could pick up the role where Shatner left off at the end of TOS, but if you want a "young" Kirk then you've got to reach younger than Damon.
Or maybe you could do what middle aged acresses do when they want to appear younger, and just give him pig tails.

-
That's true about the age, I didn't think of that and the whole "younger Kirk" thing. Still, I think they probably believe they need to land a big name or two to fill the seats since even Trekkies aren't going to see some of the stuff now (and it's their own fault so I don't feel bad for Paramount, but I feel for the fans now that they have a mess of a universe to deal with).
-
Damon looks like he's 12, so he could probably pull it off. He's demonstrated some depth of character in his roles, so he might just be believable.
I'd like to see Johnny Depp in Trek, as I think he's one of the most versatile actors in hollywood.
You know, Orlando Bloom might be able to pull off a Kirk.
-
Nah, Orlando Bloom has got to wear the ears!
-
Orlando Bloom might also get women who would'nt normally watch Trek, to watch it.
/me shudders at too many squeeling women/girls at midnight showings of LOTR movies
Nah, Orlando Bloom has got to wear the ears!
-
Yeah, Spock enters the scene with alien girls on each arm, a la Peter Gunn!
-
Let's get Peter Jackson to direct, and make them all Hobbits!
-
I think Owen Wilson as a young McCoy might be interesting, but he could well steal the show. But that might mean we'd have to have Jackie Chan as Sulu.
-
Nope. All wrong. I've got the entire cast right here.
Spock- Hugo Weaving
Kirk- Matthew McConuhey (sp?)
McCoy- Dennis Leary
Scotty- Conan O'Brian
Uhura- Beyonce Knowles
Chekov- Orlando Bloom (Hope he can do a russian accent!)
-
Owen Wilson could probably play Harry Mudd... ;D But you still need a Sulu.
-
Jackie Chan? ;D
Ian Kellen?
Okay seriously, how about that guy from Space: Above and Beyond, what's his name, Jose de la Fuente or something like that?
To me he looks more Chinese than Japanese, even if he may be Latino or Filipino.
-
I did forget Sulu!
Could get the guy that's in the New Voyages skit "Center Seat".
-

Lucy Liu
-S'Cipio
-
Lucy Liu = Sulu, like what they did to Starbuck on BSG? Of course, if it's done properly I don't see why not..
-
Just heard on the "Hollywood Minute" That Matt Damon has been pegged to play the Young Kirk. I wonder who they will get to play Spock?

Damon hs enough of a baby-face that he might be able to do it with a bit of make-up
-
Here are a few possibilities
http://blogcritics.org/archives/2006/06/25/103414.php
<snip>
Captain James T. Kirk. This is the casting I read and really liked. Replacing the legendary William Shatner, Matt Damon. The guy can act, he can do action, he can shift between comedy and drama with ease, and I think he could do the character proud. The big question will be if he would go the Shatner route, or if he would employ more human-like inflections. Either way, I think Damon would be a good choice.
Commander Spock. Originally played in stoic, emotionless fashion by Leonard Nimoy, he always had this great matter of fact way of delivering lines, and having great presence with minimal motion. Who could don the pointed ears and take over as the half alien science officer? I read someone suggesting Adrien Brody, I don't think so. The name that I like is Billy Zane, he has the right voice, and facial features that look right for the role. He doesn't really look like Nimoy, but I think I could believe him as Spock.
Doctor Leonard "Bones" McCoy. There is only one person I can think of to take over the reigns from the late DeForrest Kelley, that name is Gary Sinise. He can act and has the perfect look to take on the role of the good doctor. Can't you picture Sinise entering into some verbal sparring with Zane's Spock, or one of those "I'm a Doctor" lines, or even a classic "He's dead, Jim." Sinise is the one name to consider.
Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott. None other than Austin Powers himself, Mike Myers, would be up to the task of the late James Doohan's most famous role. Take this comedic chameleon and focus his abilities on the Scottish engineer, and you could have a match made in heaven. There is no doubt that he could do the accent, and he seems to have the right physical presence for the job. Myers in this role could prove to be inspired casting.
Ensign Pavel Chekov. This is a tough one, a young Russian for the helm. Perhaps someone like Frankie Muniz? He seems to be about the right age and have the right build for it. I think the biggest question would be if he could pull off the Russian accent. I am sure a vocal coach could get him doing it, but then it would be up to the audience buying Malcolm as a bridge officer on the Enterprise. Could be interesting to see if he can put a spin on Walter Koenig's Monkee inspired role.
Lieutenant Uhura. Another tough one. How about Regina King? She is a very good actress, and I think she could take on the role of the Enterprise communication officer. She is equally adept at drama and comedy, as shown in films like Ray and Miss Congeniality 2. I would like to see her in the role originated by Nichelle Nichols.
Lieutenant Commander Hikaru Sulu. As I was thinking of names, a certain guy came to mind, but I could only think of the movie I saw him in, not the name. The film is Better Luck Tomorrow and the actor is Parry Shen. I know, Shen is Chinese and George Takei is Japanese, but that doesn't chnage my opinion that Shen would be very good in the role. I think he has the right look, and from what I saw in that aforementioned film was very good.
<Snip>
Don't like the Cekov choice, not quite sure about Myers as Scotty either. But I do like Billy Zane for Spock alot and Gary Sinise could work great as Bones. As for the other they seem pretty good choices.
-
BTW there would be an obvious choice for Sarek......Leonard Nimoy!
Also notice on the cooments of the link above, Chris Doohan wouldn't mind having a shot at his fathers role....interesting.
-
Nimoy is out of the question. He has retired from acting to be a globe trotting photographer. He was offered, but turned down a guest spot on Shatners' show because he doesn't do "that" anymore.
-
Oh? But commercials are still okay? Hrrumph!
I guess he took the last part of "live long and prosper" too seriously!
-
I think Nimoy wants to get back to his music career

I refuse to click that link. I JUST KNOW what's at the other end of it...

I didn't click the link either, but you're a bastard for posting it anyway :p

Ballad of Bilbo Baggins
Leonard Nimoy
In the middle of the Earth, in the land of Shire,
Lives a brave little hobbit whom we all admire.
With his long, wooden pipe, fuzzy wooly toes,
He lives in a hobbit hole and everybody knows him.
Chorus:
Bilbo. Bilbo Baggins. Only 3 feet tall.
Bilbo. Bilbo Baggins. Bravest little hobbit of them all.
Now hobbits are peace lovin' folks you know,
They're never in a hurry and they take things slow,
They don't like to travel away from home,
They just want to eat and be left alone.
But one day Bilbo was asked to go,
On a big adventure to the cave below.
To help some Dwarves get back their gold,
That was stolen by a dragon in the days of old.
Chorus
Well, he fought with the goblins.
He battled a troll.
He riddled with gollum.
A magic ring he stole.
He was chased by wolves.
Lost in the forest.
Escaped in a barrel from the elf king's home.
Bilbo. Bilbo Baggins. Bravest little hobbit of them all.
Bilbo. Bilbo Baggins. Bravest little hobbit of them all.
End
;D

arrrgh!!! Where's Centurus when ya need him?

OK Chuut I'll rase you a William Shatner ;D

arrrgh!!! Where's Centurus when ya need him?
This is the first time anyone's ever needed me, and you caught me at a bad time. I was on the throne making a delivery.
-
Now this proves that even Stormtroopers take their cues from Captain Kirk.

Yipes.
Takei still looks more like Sulu and Nimoy still looks more like Spock than Shatner looks like Kirk anymore.
If they made TOS today and hired Shatner, he might play Harry Mudd.
-

seconded. But I wouldn't hire Shatner for a new Trek. Especially not in his time period. It would just be wrong!
-
But we all know he wants badly to be back in Trek, as Captain Kirk!
-
Make him an admiral in the 24th Century, behind a desk, having flashbacks of his glory days every 3 seconds. Just kidding. :-D
Personally, I'd like to see some of his books adapted for the big screen. I think they would work out if done tastefullly and creatively.
-
wasn't Matt Damon the guy playing George Reeves / Superman also, in some new movie comeing out?
Stephen
-
Nope. Matt Damon was in the Bourne Identity and Bourne Supremacy, Oceans Eleven remake, Oceans 12, the up coming Oceans 13. He also played the fallen angel Loki in the movie Dogma. He also did Good Will Hunting.
Don't know the name of the guy who's the new Superman.
-
That's right, what was his buddies name, I knew It was one of them.
Stephen
-
Only buddy I know of is Ben Can't Really Act Affleck.
-
Why not just sign the entire cast of Ocean's 11, 12 and 13?? Bam instant mega box office!! :puke:
Please I beg in the name of all that is holy, cast unknowns for a TOS prequel. Or have a heart and let the franchise die with whatever shred of dignity it may still possess
-
Honestly Vipre, I don't think that would be necessary. There are many actors/actresses out there, both boxoffice names and not, with great talent and skill that could play these roles tastefully and faithfully, and I personally believe that if the director and producers cast the right people carefully, that this project could be a success. Then again, that's just me.
Matt Damon as Capt. Kirk might actually be a good choice. Keep in mind I said might. It all depends on how well he takes to the role, and how much research he does on the character. Knowing professional actors who take their trade seriously, not only will Damon be watching all the TOS episodes over and over again, same with the first 6 movies, he'll also get in touch with William Shatner and other surviving members of the cast, trying to get as much information about the character of Kirk to most effectively recreate the character to the best of his abilities.
I wonder though if Johnny Depp would ever be right for a role in this movie. His qualifications as an actor are rarely ever matched. He is truly a character actor, virtually transforming himself into the character he portrays, and if you really pay attention to his films, rarely are any two different characters of his remotely alike.
I think, if done tastefully, and decisions made carefully, this could be a success. Only time will tell.
-
Centurus,
Don't get me wrong, what I said wasn't meant as a dismissal of any actors skill or dedication to their careers. I just feel that the "Powers in Control" of the industry might go with the hey lets milk this cow treatment rather than an honest attempt at producing a quality (story vs name/face) movie. I very much hope it's the former.
Also I agree about Depp. In Don Juan Demarco with Brando....totally believable character
(edited because I managed to spell correctly the wrong word)
-
Ahh, then I stand corrected. The only thing I hope for is that B&B don't come anywhere near this project at all. If the people that were involved in season 4 of Enterprise have a hand to play in this project, I believe it can be done successfuly. I know many people hate Enterprise, but the 4th season was incredible. Most of the stories were not only well written, but tastefully directed and produced. The only downfall that those people had were trying to repair some of the damage that B&B did in the previous seasons, but I honestly believe if it had been given a chance, it would have worked.
What we could do is start a writing campaign to the studios begging them to make very wise decisions, not for the sake of milking the project, but for the sake of creating a quality piece of work that us Trek fans would love.
-
Oh one other thing. Please, no time travel plot or subplot or I'll call the Temporal Police myself. :police:
-
I always thought it was too bad that they did a Mirrorverse episode of Enterprise (at least I heard they did, I didn't see it). Otherwise, they could have claimed that Archer and co. were the guys who started the mirrorverse Federation on it's path (and might have made sence given the struggles they went through) then they capped it off with the whole Riker appearance. Now the 3 seasons of travesty are tied to us forever (unless a creative writer comes through and finds a way out).

Yeah the mirror episode was called "In a Mirror Darkly" I think. It had the TOS Defiant appearing in the mirror uni after it dissapeared in TOS and Archer capturing it.
"the whole Riker appearance" <-- Whats the deal with this? I didn't watch Enterprise because it wasn't on any stations where I live. (at least none I could receive)
-
Riker and Troi made an appearance in the final episode. The actual story took place during the Pegasus incident in TNG, where Riker was torn between his oath to silence and his duty to Capt. Picard about the top secret phase cloak on the Pegasus.
Troi had recommended that Riker go to the holodeck and replay the final days of the NX-01 to help him gain a perspective on what he should do, so the last episode of Enterprise was actually a historial recreation on the Ent-D holodeck.
-
So any hope of somebody stating in the future that the whole Enterprise series was actually just a holonovel written by Ensign Jonathan Archer of the Enterprise 1701-D ;)
-
*looks at Vipre and smacks him with a rubber chicken* Nope, sorry, no chance of that. Also, even with B&B having screwed up Enterprise, I doubt they would have written that.
Oh well, let's see what else develops with this project.
-

Hold on, I thought this forum had an anti-rubber chicken rule in place. :rules: *checks rules again* Anti-rubber whaa...wtf...oh man that just ain't right.
-
Nope, no anti-Rubber Chicken rules anywhere on D.net so far. And besides, they never obey many rules anyway.
-

OK, several things.
1 - Where's your imagination? Sure there's a chance. All you have to do is start an episode of a later trek and have somebody coming out of a holodeck that's playing an incident where they get to be Riker going into a holodeck session about a fictional Enterprise and past that never existed. heh. ;)
2 - B&B wouldn't have written that? I think they would have wet themselves with joy if they had only had the creativity to put together such a well thought out and entertaning storyline. :D
-
I think Enterprise all started during a round of drinks between B&B in which the phrase, "Can you imagine the looks on their nerdy faces if...." was uttered.
-
Depp as Harcourt Fenton Mudd... ;D
-
Depp as Harcourt Fenton Mudd... ;D
He looks nothing like the part, but he'd play it brilliantly! ;D
-S'Cipio
-
whaddya mean? dress him up in that Pirates of the Carribean outfit and maybe put a pillow under his shirt and he'd look perfect... ;D
-
Nah, make him Trellain!
-
Ah yes! Trelane, the erstwhile Squire of Gothos.
-
SCREW THAT! Depp as Kirk!!
Can't believe I hadn't thought of that sooner! Think about it, Depp would do Kirk better than Shatner!
-
Depp can play Manny Ramirez tossing his bat away after getting bopped by the Bronx Muggers' brooms.
Depp's pirate Jack Sparrow makes me think of Manny Ramirez and the way he looks and moves on TV.
-
I think it's funny that Depp based his Jack Sparrow character on Keith Richards.
-
There is a rumor that Philip Seymour Hoffman (who won the 2005 Oscar for his portrayal of Truman Capote) might be cast in the role of the ship's surgeon, but not Leonard "Bones" McCoy, perhaps the role of Doctor Mark Piper who was McCoy's predecessor who appeared in the TOS episode "where No Man Has Gone Before".

-
I saw him as a villain in some movie recently, but I can't remember what it was for the life of me.
-
Mission Impossible 3? I didn't see it, but I heard he was a villain in that one.
-
I vote for Matt Damon as Kirk and Ben Affleck as Spock. Boyo, can you imagine their first kiss?!!!?
Okay, enough of that silly dreaming...I seriously see nothing wrong with Matt Damon as Kirk...I'm sure he'll make an excellent dream boat captain kissing all the aliens and letting his hands roam were no man has gone before? What else is required besides an ability to speak in stilted sentences?
-
I'd like to have seen....
John Wayne...
As James. T.
Kirk...
Can you imagine how long the dialogue would have taken?

You never know, it could have been shorter rather than longer. Kirk tried to convince spock that the Gorn attack meant war.
The Duke might have just said, "Fill yer hand, you son of a <bleep>!" and charged!

According to one of the books I read, Jack Lord was seriously considered for the role in the series, but he and his wife wanted a piece of the franchise. Book'em Spocko! ;D
