Apparently, on Taldren's site, in the races section the Lyran-kitties are described as
The Lyran Star Empire, unlike most races, is a matriarchal society. The Lyrans (pronounced Lear-uhns) are a warrior race with feline ancestors. They are the size of a large human with incredible strength.
But the weird thing is, I couldn't find any non-SFC references to the Lyrans being matriarchal. Even in the manual for SFC and SFC2 they don't mention the Lyrans as that.
Is it something that Taldren/Interplay made up for licensing reasons? Or is it mentioned in the SFB books?

Actually, you have a good point there. In all the SFB Manuals I got, I don't recall anything saying that the Social Structure of the Lyrans was "Matriarcal". I thought the SFB Manuals indicated that the Seletolians had this kind of structure (i think?), but I'm not sure on this. I thought the Lyrans had pretty much a Feudalistic Government that was more or less organized then the Kzinti's (less Cival Wars then what the Kzintis went through).
Might just be a SFC add in when SFC1 was first made.

Taldren made that up.
