Had a brief conversation with Jacobyi last night where he floated the idea of a Dyna whose time and scope were more condensed that would last from just a weekend day or so to maybe a whole weekend.
For example:
2 Teams: Mirak vs Klinks
Objective: Capture Planet(s) in a disputed area of the border.
Teams would consist of Line ships and ships considered to be for Flipping.
The line ships would engage or run interfereance so that the Flippers can saftly attack enemy hexes.
Ships like Carriers, Tenders and Dreads would be limited.
i guess there are other ideas out there but as i said this seemed like a good way to play the game between bug Dynas and still have that event type feel.
-
Not a bad idea, a Dyna server that focuses narrowly on one or two sectors.
20x20 map would be one hex per section, 40x40 4 hexes per section.
Would definately have to have a whole new set of rules though. Since the scale is much much smaller
-
I love this idea!
Oh boy, imagine traditional enemies... and a shiplist that restricts out everything except what was on that border at that time... Small sector sized map... low DV's... One weekend only! Whoohaw!

I would say let the server run for a week, or until one side acheives a victory.
What would be very interesting is if you could get a complete Order of Battle for these servers.
Is it possible for the servers to have an empty shipyard (or maybe just fill it with freighters) and make it so the ships have to be assigned with the OCI?

Shouldn't be a problem, except that you do need to run the yards and the OCI requires a stable SQL setup.

These servers would make perfect "test" servers for the SQL server wouldn't it?
-
I find it pretty funny that about 3-4 months ago I suggested this. Needless to say it was not thought very highly of.
I suggested a much smaller map and much shorter window of play time.
I suggested it cause when I played I did not see many people on, and could not find them when they were on. I figured if folks could only play for a very short amount of time that the server would be full of folks during the narrow window of play time. Further a small map would focus PvP more. It might sorta mimick the old days.
Glad the reception is a little warmer this time around.

Oh the basic concept's been suggested probably a half dozen times at least, it's just never been set up.
Problem (for the SQL) is that we're missing Bonk for like 2 years anyway. Hopefully after that he'll find a job with better net access, but who knows.
Important thing is the guy is employed.
So dunno who's running the SQL stuff, or if anyone is.
-
I think Mags is handling the server kit debugging in what time he has available. But all the OCI stuff (as far as I know) is Bonk's baby, and on the shelf unless he miraculously gets unexpected free time and access while he's up there. Otherwise I think OCI for Bonk is going to stand for "O Cursed Insects!" ;)

Instead of having ships "assigned", which is an idea I have never liked, couldn't we just set the shiplist at a particular time and leave it as for the duration of the server. Sure the turns would click by, but the shiplist would never change.
Say, the shiplist is set to 2268, and those ships available would show in the shipyard. Nothing new would show up. What you have at that time stamp would be all you are going to get for the duration. You can create an early, mid, or even late era feel for the whole time.

Um, we did this already ;D

Incorrect, it has been done before. It was on such a server that I got to be introduced to Mog and a friendship grew. ;)
Actually there was a series of such servers, a Fed vs Klingon on, Kzin vs Lyan, etc. It was about 3-4 years ago and turnout was very light.
The biggest problem with such limited scope servers is they tend to be very straight forward affairs with lots of "trech warfare" and little room for any strategic aspects. A bull rush at the front will keep some happy but not all.

Well the idea at least for me is short mindless and fun.
We thought id be a cool way to get a load of people on a server with fairly equal ships and have them shoot at each other. Other elements and themes can be injected based on the players.
Here is one for mindless, capture the planets.
Everyone starts in a Heavy and if they lose it they get a dronner (or hexflipper ship) Of course they can buy up over time and get a heavy again but you need to have enough people to balance the attack. Thats what 4 ships?
Duration 8 hours on a Saturday night.
Now that said, I like the idea of organized SFB based border battles, with fleet rules etc...that would be cool too.

With condensing the map the focus will be PvP, not mass hex flipping. My 'official' vote would be for a 3 day Weekend event (Fri,Sat,Sun) Fed vs Klink bloodbath :) If its a hit we can continue on down the line with other race wars. Heavy battlecruisers will be the heaviest ships allowed, perhaps only a couple of those being given out to the RM's. The rest of us will be in Line Lc's and Hc's (Fast cruisers are fine as well i think) Every ship should be available from the start. Maybe some restrictions on what ships are allowed to wing with each other if everyone can agree on it.
Disengagement is allowed with only a time penalty if outclassed by opponent ships. Otherwise must fight to the death. Thus ship costs might have to be pretty low in order to compensate for loss of ships. I really liked how KCW allowed you to place special 'bounties' on players, would like to see this in along with challenge matches.
Well thats just my 2 cents, i think it would be a blast! Any other suggestions?
-
I know its kinda against the spirit of what we do here, but I'd like to encourage disengagement. Especially in an OOB scenario.
I had written a scenario, if we had ever gotten the source code to the game, it might have worked. But since we didn't I'll have to take a look-see if I can convert it without a "continuous space"
Essentially its "Wrath of Khan" in the Mirror Universe. :)

How about something like a Federation Civil War? Or at least a small series of skirmishes between Federation ships over some objective. (The station where Genesis is being held? A planet being sown with Quadrotriticalee?)

It's been done
(brilliantly if I may offer an objectice opinion)
I've got a sequel set, but really need to do a few others first.
(By which I mean I need to con someone else into doing the tech stuff first)
-
As for a Federation civil war, "Mirror, Mirror" was close enough on that.

These types servers have been done. Now, saying that, if you guys set it up I would bet that the player base to come and fly. I just don't think that you are going to find the current admins would be too enthusiatic to arrange them again.
The only thing I would ask would be NOT to have assigned ships such as the very restrictive OOB that was used for the GW series.
Good ideas. Keep 'em coming.

Hardly. They have been attempted only. None have been given the life juice of all that is green and good. ;D
-
What does OCI stand for?
-
"Oh Cursed Insects!" You heard it 1st from ED.
-
Seriously, the OCI stands for Online Campaign Interface. It is only functional with SQL based servers. It replaces the WebMap used for flatflie servers and is MUCH more capable.
Bonk has more details, but he's gone away... :'(

Damn straight skippy!! I'm glad we only had a limited supply and I was being the DD. Man that stuff is some tasty goodness! I could really see myself getting f*cked up beyond belief on it!!
Merry Christmas to us!! Much belated thanks to DocPyscho!!

why not use the server that is presently running?? the forge, and say on a particular night, all combatants meet in a particular area as such and such races only or in whatever race you want ,upto whatever size ship class you want to duke it out over wehatever goals you want and save the hassel of setting up a new server...plus u have the advantage of a working OCI??
