Title: TOS Frigate for Modeling consideration
Post by: Bernard Guignard on September 16, 2006, 08:16:05 am
Neale Davidson AKA Vanguard has done a nice variation of the McKenzie class Frigate from Fasa that would work nicely in the game
here's his schematic:
using Atras Burke Class or Desty Novas this could be bashed quite easily I think. I hope that there are some takers.

I'm not crazy about the box like aft hull, but it's cool enough. I'd D/L it.

My opinion when you look at it you see a tos version of the Okninawa class  ;D

Ya might check this site ..........

http://sfc.strategyplanet.gamespy.com/omega/fleetdock13/

there are several model packs that may contain this ship, don't forget to check the packs in their archives as well.  ;)

I don't think we ever made this one at the Fleetdock.

This is the first I've seen this particular ship.

I figured that I'd give it a go. Almost ready for texturing, I think. I rounded the back of the rear deck a bit to blend it with the shape of the lower hull. I can square it off if you think the author would prefer as little deviation as possible from the original schematic. Anything else, let me know. Poly count is at 3764. I'd like to keep it under 4k, if possible.

I'm working on the Apollo now. I'm not sure why textures are done the way that they are in KA, but there's over 130 materials for the one model and there's standard and damage textures assigned to the same model (and polygons). I assume that KA can differentiate between them, somehow. The .mod (or 3ds) doesn't support that though. I'm still working on it. Sorry it's taking a while. I'm learning as I go.

It's due to the Lightwave format that KA is using. The older version of Lightwave doesn't support "combined" mapping, at least not where the KA models are concerned. That's why every part or subsection has a separate texture.

The game also reads the damage model as underneath the main model so that whenever a section of the ship is hit, part of the main can be blasted away to show the insides. That requires both the damage and the main to be combined but it's obviously a gripe when converting the ship to another format. If possible, you might try contacting the original author to see if they have a copy of the ship minus the damage.

Looks good Rod but how about a back shot and bottom too As I'm just having a hard time Reconciling  that front shot with the side and top.

Hi Rod:

this was PMed to me from the designer of the schematic

"From: Vance

Pretty nice job of it so far. Looks better than I thought it would. My original idea had the aft taper flat and down, until it matches the 'Detroyat' style underside.

But, they're free to do what they like of course."

That is an outstanding Fed Design, espeically for TOS era ships.  I hope nobody minds, but I copied down the schematic to help me design another model project I will eventually get to.  I don't want to copy the the design completly, but it has some design features I really like.

Well Guys
Vances Design is Based on the FASA McKenzie class Which used a Std Constituion class Saucer As Show in this version that I drew
with STD Warp engines

This Fasa Version had different warp engine and Defletor styling  ;D

That looks like a fat grandma of a ship. I like the 1st pic.

if My memory serves me right its the typical fasa Bash and Hash, the specifications with regards to Length width and height
don't match what the ship drawing is trying to convey. Vance's design better conveys the idea. I prefer to think of the larger
version as a Heavy Carrier  ;D and yes she is a fat ship  :D

Finished. Sorry that I guessed wrong on the back end. It matches with the posted pics pretty well though, I think. Credit to "The Stress Puppy" and "Desty Nova". I used their models as reference for the emblems, decals, etc. for the textures.

Thanks everyone for the positive comments and I'm glad you like her, Bernard.  I wasn't trying for canon on the buzzards. I was trying for something a bit "more". With that said though, I'm redoing the buzzards, for all you Republicans here. :P (Actually, you all are right... This time!  ;) ) I should have it ready in a couple hrs. or so, and I'll get her uploaded.

OK. I've updated the model with the new bussards. You can see the updated pics above. I also fixed some smoothing problems on the rear deck that was causing shadows on the deck with the .mod file.

Wow!  Nice work.  I like this ship better then a Connie!  Just the overal Design seems to make more sense then a Connie in my opinion.
