Title: Dual Boot Question
Post by: Vipre on September 23, 2006, 09:05:33 am
I've got a Dell with XP on an NTFS partition and a free Fat32 partition and was wondering if I could install Win98 without messing up the XP Installation? The help files say:

"You must install Windows XP only after installing MS-DOS, Windows 95, or Windows 98 to prevent MS-DOS or Windows 95 from overwriting the Windows XP boot sector and the Windows XP startup files",

but I have no desire to reformat and reinstall XP. Is there any way around this? I'd prefer to dual boot as opposed to hooking up my separate 98 system but I'm not going to erase my current system to do so.

I think the only way you could set up dual boot with XP already installed would be to use a 3rd party boot manager.

Pretty much. Win 98 doesn't have an option in the Setup to do this. I know a few builds of Lynux does.

What you might try, if you have an extra HD, is to switch it to master, and install win 98 on it. Then add back in the old one and simply write a batch file for the Dual boot.

No extra HD just one the previous owner partitioned into 3 volumes (74gb/7.6gb/1.8gb)
When I originally installed XP I had no intention of adding another OS, but I ran into software issues that compatability mode is unable to address.

I'm *pulls out "my own horn"* almost a god with 98, 95 and DOS ::) but XP's a new creature for me. I have plenty of DVD-Rs laying around, is it possible to backup the system (all 70gb of it) to disk then do the whole reformat thing? In fact it'd be a lot less than that since I only need to back up the saved data and not the programs themselves.

Or maybe I should just pack it in since the overall concept is just barely within my mental grasp for the moment.

Nah you can Do that. Just double check your backups, Everytime I do that, I always seem to leave something out.

No, there is another way:

First you want to format the hard drive(s).  If you only have one hard drive than you want to split the hard drive into two partitions.  One drive or partition must be formated Fat32 and the other drive or partition formated in NTFS.  Then you want to install Win98 first on to the Fat32 drive or partition.  After Win98 is installed then install WinXP on to the NTFS drive or partition.

After all of that is done then do the following:

In WinXP go into the Control Panel and double click Systems.  Click the Advanced Tab then click Settings in the Startup and Recovery subsection.  In the System startup subsection under the Default operating system click the operating system you want the boot up to default to.  Then put a check in the box forDisplay list of operating systems and then to the right give yourself some time to make that choice.

IMHO this option is a little tricky and can cause problems from what I've been told.  What I did when I dual booted in Win2000/WinXP Pro is installed each operating systems on to different hard drives and then when I wanted to switch to the other operating system I rebooted and changed the boot order in Bios.  This way took a little longer but insured that there wasn't any problems.  Hope this helps.

There is a 3rd way.  Virtualization.  You can make a virtual PC under XP and run 98 in that.  Just don't ask me how, I've never bothered with that yet (VMWare I think should be able to do it).  I may need to do that soon though, so if anyone has any info on how they wish to share now would be a good time.  :)

On the virtualization angle Microsoft offers a free download for virtualization (MS Virtual Server 2005 (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserversystem/virtualserver/software/default.mspx))

Can you set up a Linux box and do that?  So that you can play your Windows games on a Linux install?

Never tried but I have heard of virtualized copies of Windows running under Linux.

Gaming is the main reason I don't try Linux.

Gaming is the main reason I don't try Linux.

Systematic illegal activities of the company plus their increasing attempts to take control of my usage of my computer and software is why I'm moving away from Windows and towards Linux.  I refuse to continue to support a company that systematically breaks and avoids the law so far without adequate punishment.  I refuse to support a company that tries to control my computer to my detriment.

If I must give up computer gaming so be it.

I refuse to buy a machine with Vista on it.  From what I hear it's too much like pay-to-play to me.  Besides, I can get a 360 for what I wanted the computer for.

That is the future that Microsoft wants.

You want to use your computer you must pay rent for the software - no rent no computer.  Even worse there have been strong hints that they want all software and digital media activated through them each time you use it.  Once the company you "bought" from stops paying Microsoft to "activate" it you lose the ability to use it.  Imagine if that had been in place years ago and Interplay/Taldren ceased to pay for SFC activation - we wouldn't be here

All this only drives me further from Windows.
