Remember the U.S. bred the Trekkie.

Quoted from the comments on the "Jedi site" linked to above.

I would bet there are more TREKKIES out there - what about OUR relgion? What about OUR basic human rights? We've suffered more, and longer, than those Star Wars nerds! We've been Geeky since the 60's! When is OUR day coming?

While there are insane trekkies out there, as far as I know none of them has ever applied to be recognized as a religion.  They do have Klingon wedding ceremonies on the bridge of hte Enterprise D  in Vegas, but then again, they have every odd type of wedding ceremony in that city.

I think it's more than just a fandom thing.
Technically, Jedi is the 4th largest religion in the UK.

I think it's part of a move to attack the established faiths too, we soo much about Islam, and so many attacks against Christianity, that these people are proclaiming their 'belief' yet it's something that hasn't caused wars and death (yet).

It's the same with Wicca, paganism and satanism... they are i believe officially recognised beliefs in the UK, yet have less foloowers than the 'Jedi's'.

I just think that pop culture isn't a good source for religion.  Also, I do not think that the Jedi's are the fourth largest religion in the UK.  I think its more likely that most of the signatures on that petition were not actual Jedi Knights, but wise guys looking for a laugh.

They really are the fourth largest,  basing it on what people put into the national census.
People may have put it into the 'other' box on religion as a protest or a joke, but in terms of numbers, it does technically mean the government has to recognise it as an actual faith.
