Title: Anyone recommend some good space sims?
Post by: FPF-Tobin Dax on November 25, 2006, 03:16:54 pm
I just downloaded the freelancer demo and wondered what the good current space sims are.

You'll have to define "space sim" 'cause Freelancer really isn't one.  You'd have to go all the way back to Independence War to find a "space sim" in my opinion.

Other than that, I really don't know of much.  There's a few MMO's but nothing truly stunning....

EXCEPT Eve Online.

If you have the time and don't mind paying monthly, it's well worth the price. I don't play currently due to time constraints but it's really a great game.

Well, strictly speaking Orbiter is more of a space shuttle/spaceflight sim but well worth checking out:

http://orbit.medphys.ucl.ac.uk/orbit.html

I have it on both laptop and desktop. It is free and when it says that it values realism you get your money's worth! Just try docking with the ISS slightly angle off or trying to switch direction suddenly and you will have a meeting with Mr. Gravity.

I highly recommend to all.

Home world 1 and 2 where pretty good, Space rangers one is ok also, I would shy from the second one, due to the Starforce CD thingie. I kinda like the ST Armada games also, SFC of course, that goes without saying.

Hope this helps.

Strictly speaking the Homeworld series is not a space sim but a real time strategy.

It is, however, AWESOME!

Thanks guys. I really don't want to build infrastructure, I just want to fly and shoot stuff, preferably online with multiplayer, but not paying a fee or having a steep learning curve as my time and funds are limited.  That said, I have spent a few minutes with the freelancer demo now and liked it and apparently there are still people playing it online.

I think Lyrekiller (CayneG) still plays it abit along with Soreyes. So you would even have some friends here to help get you started online.

Free game, shoot-em up with online servers

http://www.freeallegiance.org

It's a game that Microsoft abandoned and these folks got MS to give them the sources.

I did play Freelancer online though only through my server that I had setup. Against other people no. :)

Yes, unfortunately.  That's why I dumped it after a while.

Have you tried Freespace 2? I don't due multi because they are revamping it, but the straight retail settings should with the net user interface they recently made at Game-Warden.com (go there for more info.)

Besides the AI camapigns will challenge you enough!

I just got my butt handed to me by the WC Saga Pirates... ;)

Plenty of multi-mission campaigns made like The Babylon Project or Derelict (Complete with voice acting! Shameless self advertisement).

Link the the last of the great space combat sims: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php

Hmm, if one liked Freelancer, there's always Darkstar One.

I still play Freelancer on line. There are about 150 servers to choose from. Some are something like the single player game. Then there are some that are so Modded that it almost does not look like the same game.

A few servers I can recommend.

1) The Void.  A huge Mod was made for this server. Can be fun. Usually anywhere from 25 to 80 people on at any time.

2) Eagle Utopia.  A sever that will drive you NUTS!!!!. The Pirates have been given Hawk light fighters with Lv 9 Champ Shields and Lv 9 & 10 guns :o

3) Freelancer Rollplay LV. All I can say is that if you thought that Nomads were nasty, on this server wait until you run into a souped up Nomad Gunboat :o :brickwall:

I just bought and received freelancer from ebay, but haven't openned it yet.  It might take me awhile.
