Title: Lyrkiller's WindowsXP tech tips
Post by: IAF Lyrkiller on December 15, 2006, 09:19:06 am
Last night, I registered to a Dell forum and it gave me a tip that may help people avoid from reinstalling windows.

This fix is only for winxp. Some of you may already know it most may not.

Here it is:

Go to Start/Run and type in sfc(space)/scannow. You WILL need the windows cd in the drive.

This may keep anyone from reinstalling XP for a little while longer.

More tips later. ;)

Does this fix XP somehow or fix the game SFC?

And do you know if it can it be used with an ME to XP upgrade disk.

Despite the name; SFC /scannow has nothing to do with Starfleet Command

SFC = System File Checker

It's been around since Win98, what it does is scan your OS for corrupt files and with the OS CD, will repair or replace the file that it finds corrupt.  I used to run this program about once a month when I had Win98 installed.  Oddly enough SFC is not a part of Win2000.

I've advised using System File Checker ever since I learned about it on Win 98.  It can help save a lot of problems with corrupted files.  One of Microsofts better utilities.

Well, it did not cure the problem that I am having now. It will still not come up out of standby. It locks up.

So, it looks like that I will be installing win98SE unless something else can be tried. NOTE: I want DOS back in the worst way. ;D

Have you tried FreeDOS (http://www.freedos.org/)?  It can be used as a bootable CD or installed.
