For the last few weeks it's been increasingly difficult to get onto the forum. If I can get on, then lots of times it's difficult to navigate. Sometimes I can't even post. I'm not having this problem on other sites, so I'm pretty sure it's not my computer. I saw a thread somewhere else about January being a weird month for the Dynaverse.

Crapcast or Hackers...take your pick.

Hang in there guys. You have to remember, Frey is hosting this place from his home now, and there are Cable thieves, that he's working very hard on, to get arrested. I know IT's frustrating my friends. And I know I've said it before, But if we all where to throw a few bucks towards Frey, it would help alot.
The servers run just over a 100 bucks a month, and the wear and tear on them... IT all adds up, and Frey has been doing this on his own dime, well a few people have helped out.
Like I said, I know It's frustrating, But remember, this is what our community is all about. Helping those who need it, and hunting down those who pirate cable, and block our site... Not that I would ever be able to condone a lynching, but It's there. ;)

My bad,
pay the man !

If there's even a single wireless connection on Frey's network it would be very easy to siphon off bandwidth. Especially if that machine was set up to share its internet connection.
If it's all wired, then perhaps a basement-to-attic, stem-to-stern, port-to-starboard survey of the place to find the offending cable that shouldn't be connected to anything you own that leads out of the place.
Just trying to be helpful.
OH, one more thing. If they're linking through this site somehow and siphoning bandwidth that way, there's always finding that link and diverting it to goatse or something. Make sure it's revolting enough to get their attention quickly.

I hear ya Max. From what the mod's understand, It's a bunch of Illegals, actually going out, and making a connection, on legal lines, which then Drops the bandwidth from those who pay, way the hell down.
The cable company comes out, fixes the problem, but without actually seeing the people do it, the police will do nothing. You can track the cable line to those who steal it, but without catching them in the act, nothing can be done.
Hell trust me, I told Frey the other day, I'd be happy to sit on the porch at night with my new rifle, but he seems to have this problem with me shooting people. :D :D :D

Cable thieves, eh? B*stards! Well, at least I know it's not my computer. (whew.)
I'm not sure I understand why the police can't follow an unauthorized cable line and arrest whoever's at the end of it. Still, hopefully one day those guys will get it sorted out somehow.

I have read about it and it frustrating. I would also love to get my dads rifle (98Kar w/ bayonet). ;D

It has been duely noted on TS several times... any time there is a good soccer game on... Frey's internet goes boom.

Cable thieves
I say we find their lair, lay a siege, and commence a full scale bombardment!

But is he a little fuzzy in the area of kneecaps?

You know, IT's just an idea, but I still have alot of copperheads out here, and Frey has a corner Cable box... :D :D :D

Just curious. If your wireless SSID Broadcast is disabled, and your network is 128 bit WEP key encrypted ( you must enter the key on each machine), can your bandwidth still be stolen if someone does not have the key or has not hacked it somehow?

I'm not sure Farfarer, in this case, It's from Illegal aliens actually running some Coax from a Junction box. IT tears down the whole Bandwidth for the entire nieghborhood. It's like splicing into a phone line, and then having line noise.

Farfarer: Yes, but you would need a machine capable of tearing down 128-bit encription fast enough so that you wouldn't notice too much of a speed hit. Most machines can't, and very high-end machines could do it with dial-up speed output. In other words, you'd need a supercomputer or a cluster with the mother of all upload connections.
Stephen: The solution there is simple. Erect a 50,000-watt electric fence around the cable box, with the fence cable wrapped around a chainlink fence. Just inform the cable company so they can have you shut it off when they need to get into it. Or find the spliced cable and run a 440-volt line onto it. It shouldn't take more than 1 or 2 machine fires to get the message across.

WEP is nicknamed Weak Encryption Protocol for a reason. It's not that hard for someone with good software to get in because the algorythm is STUPID. It reuses code segments all the time. The longer you look at data traffic on a network, the easier it is to crack. Furhtermore, WEP keys are generated, not entered. You're confusing WEP with WPA.
-
I am using WPA, WEP is way too weak. :)
