Title: The Care and Feeding of Fighters.
Post by: Alphageek on March 10, 2007, 11:58:14 pm
I'll confess that I have no clue, and no skill using, fighters.  In general, I sort of feel that fighters are a big pain in the keister.  Instead of focusing on your ship, you have to obsess about the fighters--where are they, etc.  I also don't understand how they work overall.  It bugs me that I can slag a flight of 8 down to one, have it escape, and another 8 jump me a little later.  Which ones carry what weapons, and so forth?

And is this a request for training in fighter tactics, or another complant about fighters? if it is a request I will be happy to inform and educate in the art of fighter usage :)

I know the thing that bugs me about fighters the most is that you can knock a flight of 6 down to 1, and it will repair and relaunch with 6.  But that only happens once.  If they recover the fighters a second time, they will not launch back at full strength (unless someone has been messing with the Shiplists)

Most fighters have simple phaser 3s on them.  A few are armed with Phaser Gs or Phaser 2s.  I have a complete list of what the stock fighters are armed with what.  But I can't seem to find it at the moment.

One of the big things I miss from SFC1 is that different Fighters were represented by different Icons.  Patrol, Intercept, Heavy, Assault.  In 2 and OP its just Patrol (for all fighters) Assault (for PFs)

It's definitely a request for fighter training.  I really don't understand them at all.

I try to have fighters harrass from far away, but sometimes they get stupid and get too close. Or if you get your shields to soak up an alpha from an enemy ship, a squadron of fusion fighters following you in can do a lot.
At least in EAW/OP the fighters don't disappear if you don't remember to collect them all at the end of a mission (like SFC1).

That was fixed in the 1.03 patch... thankfully.  Yes that was very annoying to have to hold off on the destruction of the last enemy until all of your fighters had returned to base.

I will be posting a guide that explains everything about all the fighters in the SGO7 list. Stay tuned.

Just one gold star and I thought it was worth at least one and a half ;D

Of course if you intend flying Klingon, you may wish to concern yourself with Fighter Defence.  I routinely make myself fly early-mid era D6V, D7V etc.  and find they simply don't have the battle-winning appeal they had in Fed and Emp, for example.

Of course. Klingon fighters are appropriately 'industrial' and the CV's ( like the dreaded point defence uber-beast the D6U ) somewhat vulnerable.

The CV/CVL actually work well with a human ally, and can work against an AI solo, but the mission times double - good fun and tactical, but not the best use of your time for the team i.e. Kreug.

As for the regeneration thing, since the fighter groups are so stupid, I think this is fine for play balance - and I have had to fly again and again against Fluf's CVs.  Oh, by "again" I mean "again in a new ship and one hour later as I was killed".

Alpha, if you get interested in PF tactics, drop a PM and we'll chat.  It shouldn't take long to communicate the small amount of knowledge I have on those.

Stock fighter weapon's damages may be found here at the bottom of the list.

I can't remember if the loadouts are in Manual Additions in OP, they may only appear in EAW's Manual Additions. If not, open the Fighter List with a spread sheet application and you can read them.
