Title: Help Needed for a game.
Post by: Storvick_XC on April 13, 2007, 02:16:40 pm
I have a game I bought a long time ago. Rain Bow 6, back when it worked for Win 95 and 98. Now that I have Vista I can't get the game to work at all no matter what I do to the properties file.

You're screwed.  MS disabled a lot of the stuff that would make Vista backwards compatible, for who knows what reason (other than they hate people using resources not made by MS).

I don't expect they will make it backwards compatible in the near future either.  Until someone hacks Vista (yep, you're going to have to rely on the Pirates that MS is supposedly trying to discourage) and makes a program that emulates the stuff cut from Vista...you might be out of luck.

Or you could try hacking Vista yourself.  I don't know what the programming of Rainbow 6 runs on so I'm not certain whether it's just the drivers of your card, or if it's actually MS's "great" gaming advancements that are causing your problems.

See if your card has updated drivers for Vista.  That MIGHT work...or then again...maybe not.

When the net is only accessible on Vista, I'll run Vista.
Till then, I'll stick with XP.

Then you're safe for the forseeable future.

Much of the Internets backbone runs on Unix variants and Linux using open standards.  Microsoft would lock it in as Vista only if they could but they can't.  If they did I wouldn't want to bet on Gates and Ballmer living 90 days after (no I wouldn't do anything to them).

Try this:

Quote
You may be able to get older Windows XP games running in Windows Vista by using the compatibility mode option.

Once the game has been installed:

1. Find the game icon listed in your games directory.
2. Right click on the game and click on Customize. This will bring up the customize menu.
3. Select Play.
4. Select Edit.
5. This will bring up the Properties screen. Click the Compatibility tab.
6. Check 'run in compatibility mode' and then choose Windows XP or whatever operating system the game was designed for.
7. Press Apply then press OK. You will be back at the customize menu.
8. Close the customize screen.

The game should now be configured to run in Compatibility mode.

Hope this helps.
