To get a vista computer to connect to the dynaverse, try this...its worked for me 85% of the time for both OP and EAW ... a pain in the a**, but have been able to connect to the dyna with a wireless vista laptop, windows firewall and norton internet security running, and behind a linksys router, so those with vista problems, give this a try...
Load game, install the direct x option for both OP and EAW when asked, windows firewall turned on, add these to windows firewall and any other security program youre running: C:\Windows\System32\dpnsvr.exe , C:\Windows\System32\driverquery.exe , C:\Windows\System32\dplaysvr.exe Make sure ALL the .exe files in the starfleet command folder are set to run in compatibility mode for windows xp, AND are added to windows firewall and whatever other security program you use... for OP : (Autostart, SFCOPSetupMFC, SFCOP Refit Utility, StarFleetOP, SFCOP, patch, patchSFCOP, ErrorReport)
For EAW : (patch, patchSFC2, error report, SFC2 Refit Utility, SFC2, SFC2Setup, starfleet2)
Windows firewall should ask if you want to unblock anything that hasnt been added, and allow unblock... same with other security program.
It may give the firewall message the first few times its tried and take a while to connect, but once it "learns" to connect, it should be somewhat consistant.. (should being the operative word :P) ... was able to fly with Komodo Dragon and Bartok on the Boneyard server yesterday, so good luck, hope this helps.

I don't use any kind of software firewalls, and I have a lot of trouble connecting to dynaverse with Vista, even if in compatibility mode.

Hmmm ... see if internet explorer security itself is not allowing something through.... the settings above assume youre using security, thats how ive managed to connect on a somewhat constant basis... its not perfect, but somewhat seems better than none.
