Though I liked the dynamics of the 3-sided war (I hate you Chuut) do we have the playerbase for it?
-
Depending on who the third party was I'd fly for them, if only to provide a spoiler element to the perpetual bickering between the Lyrans and the Mirak.

No.

Someone would have to email me or get me on messenger.

I'd hate to see the already small player base further split up over 3 teams. Also consider how much more likely it will be that one of these three teams gets steamrolled when there is by definition less players populating each side. Might make for some very unhappy people on that side or a de facto two-sided conflict anyway with the third side shut out from any serious or effective gameplay.

While I am loath to turn down a 3-way, I don't think you can manage enough cabin boys to keep me interested.
-
I'm of the same mind as you are, I like 3 sided campaigns.. but I voted for 2 for some of the reasons listed above.
-
I voted 3 mainly because I've never been in a 3 way furball.
But at least make the third party some weird element like pirate cartels or ISC/Cartel that could force the other two empires into possible union.
:D

You know, in retrospect...
If you're thinking of putting up a server, do what you feel is good. This approach has worked in the past.. asking opinions is great but if you're going to do that level of work, you should do what you enjoy to keep the frustration/tedium to a minimum.
If you're set on a 3 sided, maybe brainstorm ways to keep (like posted above) it from becoming a blowout if things swing heavy one way or another.. or another :P Compensate for the playerbase.
Build it and we will come, that much I'm sure of.
