Also, why I so seldom see octopusses (octopi...?)...

I don't know who 'Ted' is, but he's got some really cool video! The first two minutes are about bio-luminescence, but after that is 4 or 5 minutes about octopusses with some great footage...

Squid are amazing too, the rapid colour and pattern changes, communication and intelligence are remarkable. (And they're tasty! ;D) Cephalopoda are a most interesting class of creatures. (I've linked some squid videos here before, let me see if I can find them again...)

Blah... squid is in that special category of food that sounds like it tastes.

Sounds like you have not had it prepared properly. You want nice sized ones about 4-8 inches of body, gut and pen them, trim the fins and tentacles off, slice the body open and make cross hatch cuts in about a 1/2" grid on the inside, grill covered on foil over low open flame for about 2-3 minutes, brushing with a soy sauce based barbecue sauce once or twice... et voilą! Only way to go. The key is a very short cooking time.

I guess not.. Once, when I was in the army, I had a sergeant who's wife was from Korea. Asked me to swing by his house once and pick up his lunch (I was on patrol and he was stuck in the station), so I did.
It was a boiled squid dish that stank so badly, and the odor was so greasy, 30 minutes after I dropped it off I had to go to the motorpool and trade my car for another because I couldn't take the stench any longer.
Ugh.. for me now squid is like the hard liquor you got sick on the very first time as a teenager (in my case gin)... you just don't care for it until the end of your days.

I suspect you were smelling fish sauce or blackbean sauce, both can get quite pungent with age. Squid has very little odour.

There used to be a place on 51st street in Tulsa (golden Dragon IIRC) anyway back in the 80's they had a kong poa dried squid that was delicious. You might give that a shot Dracho. It's still kinda chewy, but the sauce is so hot. I asked the chief there one time, what kind of peppers are these little black ones.
He responded, Segregated.
