Howdy, I've been looking for a Lyran 3d model created in or in a format useable in 3D Studio Max 8 (or earlier). Every search I've done here or elsewhere brings up plenty of .mod models, but that'a about it. Any suggestions?
Thanks much
Mike

Most people (including myself) do not release their actual model or texture files... which is why you are only finding .mod everywhere.
-
I don't know about version 8, but I know there are plug-ins for earlier versions that allow one to import mod files and save them in several different formats, including *.max.
-
I can convert a .mod to .3ds for you, if you tell me what model you want.
-
Thanks, Rod ONeal.
I'd like to have a Praire Cat Survey Cruiser. I think it'll look the same as a Puma, Tiger, or Bengal. Or to make it even simpler, just something like the cruiser in my signature.
BTw, where can I find these max plug-ins that all importing a .mod file to a .3ds?
Thanks much!

The max plugins only work with max 3 thru 5. They're available here

I've attached the CA from this sight. I know the author and he won't mind the conversion.

Do you want the Prarie Cat in pallet carrying mode as well?? ::)
-
Panzergranate - Now, that'd be cool! The story I've been writing involves a Praire Car carrying one admin pallet.
Rod, thanks for the .3ds. It's been awhile, but back a few years ago, I worked with Desty Nova for a bit with his Andromedan Modifications. I know he put a lot of work into the models and the mods. While not perfect, it did allow me to ticker with Andros once more. Too bad Taldren didn't work out the power absorber panel code.
Thanks!

In a previous LAN campaign, last year (Klingons versus Lyrans), the main tactical commando raiding vessel of choice for our Lyran opponents, was a Prarie Cat lugging a Troop Lander Pallet. They would sneak it through our lines (our campaign computer system allows scout cruisers to "see" a bigger surrounding area than anything else), dodging our patrols and the next thing we'd know was some key installation was being "hit" with commandoes.
They are the perfect infiltration tool.
Unfortunatle, no other race has anything quite like a Prarie Cat in SFB or SFC.... a D5G and TT Pod doesn't even come close. :(
We didn't have a model so I had to lash up something, from the stock SFC 1 L-CA, to represent a Prarie Cat in our games, until, hopefully someone models one in both solo and pallet carrying modes.... plus the TT pallet as a stand alone model in its own right.
-
That's interesting. I've seen a Lyran survey cruiser that was based off of the Tiger instead of the Pums (Tug). Lots of weapons, but I have no idea on it's capacity to carry things. Been some time since I've seen it also.
Is your modle much differnet from Desty's?

The precence of special sensors on the Prarie Cat plus the ability to carry mission specific pallets does give it huge mission possibilities for scenarioes
I just knockd up a rough pallet and stuck it under the Stock SFC 1 L-CA hull..... just so that my Klingon side could target the right ship in a campaign last year.
I might have a go at the troop pallet at sometime.... when I've finished with Klingon ships, fixing motorcycles to ride before summer is out. Actually, what does the Lyran Troop Pallet look like.... I only have the outline from the SSD to go on. Some stuff just never managed to make it into miniatures.
-
I don't have any idea - other than what you already know - the SSD. It's been years since I've seen an SSD too. I'd have to think that it wouldn't interfere with the weapons - as there were no notes about reduced weapon arcs. Fairly flat, with the same general slope that the CA/Tug/SC would have on their hulls.
I started playing SFB back in 1984 or 85. It wasn't new, but it was not nearly as expanded as it is now.

The Troop Pallet's shields adds into the host ships, don't forget.
Generally, in SFC 1, we always had the pallet detatched at the start of a battle and then it would be towed in as close as possible to the target before being left to trundle along on Impulse.
I miss Troop Pods and Pallets from SFB.
-
Battle pods... I only did a few battles with pods/pallets. The first was with the Fed Tug, which turned like a barge.
-
Ah.... but Troop Pods have their own shields which add another 10 points per shield to the host ship.
Also their power systems into the host ship's power grid.
Basically the 22nd Century version of the WW2 troop glider. The trick is to know when to drop them in SFB.
-
Never used a troop pallet/pod. Maybe an Admin - which is more of what I'd like to have attached to the Praire Cat Survey Cruiser.
So, gotta pallet?

An SCS pallet?? My usual bolt on for monitors as opposed to the support pallet.
We run tugs with pallets in our SFC 1 LAN games here, though if they are capable of independant flight and the owning player wants them detacted, they have to be just so at the start of the game.
Using the FMSE script writer pacjage, we've gradually played the various scenario games from SFB including "Survey Encounter" using a few race variations, in SFC 1.
I kind of like games with the ad-hoc starships from SFB.... tends to make the battles more challenging and need extra-cunning plans.
