Title: Temporarily sort of offline... am moving..
Post by: atheorhaven on July 08, 2008, 03:57:37 pm
.. will be only able to get in from time to time at work, my wife and I are moving about 60mi or so to an acreage and we have to get the phone company to come out and get the phone line up and running.. and that won't be until the 23rd or so.

Even then, dial-up.  :p

Looking around for high speed alternatives though once we're there.  Just bringing people up to date.  (VERY nice place though)..

I'll attach a couple of shots here.. :)  (am at work)..

Grabbed these shots to give a size of the scale of the place.. 5.7 acres is not a bad size.. ;)

It's a fixer-upper most definitely, but the only noise that you hear at night are coyotes and cows.  No more sirens, and that's a good thing...

My wife has been wanting a secluded place like that for years where she can raise her chickens... I love it. And a creek runs thru it. Nice.

It's a nice place, but will be better with some work done to it.. we're grabbing a bunch of water barrels this weekend and are going to start putting up some eavestroughing asap.. collecting rainwater helps keep the water bills down.  ;)

Two quick updates:

a) Seeing that we are renting the place, finding the landlords are now trying to see if they can sell it is a pain in the ay-es-es.  (Or @55 for those phonetically challenged).  We're still waiting to hear what they're going to do for sure, and are looking to get together a mortgage/buyout off on this or another place.

b) Our local "phone-company-that-still-operates-like-it-has-a-monopoly" has pushed off our hookup for local phone now twice, and is trying to delay until "August 27th" (which could get delayed again.  We're looking at other options, VOIP over satellite and our current cellphones are starting to look really attractive.

See if your landlord is willing to do either an Agreement For Deed or even a Seller Financing sale.  Both options can be very practical, and done properly, benefits the seller a great deal while still giving adequate protection for the buyer.

And if you can wing it, go with Metro PCS.  Not sure if it's available in your area.  If all you need is good, reliable phone service with voice mail and caller ID, you can pay 40 bucks a month for unlimited local and long distance, and no contracts.

Canadian law and Canadian phone company.. :p

We're looking at options for either buying the place, or other places that now rank a little higher.  Our concern is that if they rented under one pretense and then changed it, we'd rather not give them the first choice of getting our cash.

Same idea for the phone company up here actually.. we're looking at a company called Xplorenet that services rural locations in Canada.. and as long as we have a spot on the property that faces south, we'd be able to get them in.

Ahhh.  Forget what I said then.  Not sure if the real estate advice would work in Canada.

Okay, another update.

Barring any sudden collapses, we have the funding through and have the house that we wanted.  It's an hour away from work, but we'll own it as opposed to renting.

7 acres of land, almost 7000 sq ft(!) of shop, and a 2000 sq ft house.

Pictures up when I can, but it was only $27000 off what they wanted for the place we were renting.  :)

Am checking the forum as I can, that Centurion is a nnnnnnnnnice ship.  ;)

(Have plans for it).  ;)

Okay, updates..

We got the place, and we're now first time house owners.  :D

2000 sq ft house, 7000 sq ft shop.

Did you up a map of the place to show the size of the scale.  ;)

We're about an hour out of town now, but the place is awesome.  When I get more pictures, I'll put them up..

So basically what your saying dude, is that your bedroom is the size of a Connie bridge.... Nice one!

Congrats on getting your place looks like you got yourself a nice bit of open land... What are your plans for it?

Please don't say building a Connie to make the pic accurate

Naw, everyone knows that you build a starship in orbit.  ;)  Well, except Abrahms I guess..

I included the Connie in the pic for reference on the land size, some of us here won't get the scale otherwise.  >=)

We do have a good amount of open land, which my wife is planning on filling with a market garden, several outbuildings, a small go-kart track for the kid and his friends, and some fruit trees.  A lot more as well.. personally, I want to put up a small platform for a telescope somewhere between the house and the left side of the picture, the stars there at night are phenomenal.  :D

Getting broadband in though is going to cost about $400 for equipment, but we can get it there.  So dialup until then... once I put the phone line in the room..

its cheaper to build it on ground, don't have to wait for a rocket with the parts  ;D
