Element 122 Discovered?
http://arxivblog.com/?p=385
they need to come up with star treky name for it though :)
What do we know about 122? Marinov and co say it has a half life in excess of 100 million years and occurs with an abundance of between 1 and 10 x10^-12, relative to thorium, which is a fairly common element (about as abundant as lead).
Theorists have mapped out the superheavy periodic table and 122 would be a member of the superheavy actinide group. It even has a name: eka-thorium or unbibium. Welcome to our world!

Sheesh, I was mining thorium along long time ago. Oh wait, I really need to separate video games with Real Life.
Very cool though. Let's see I can add this to my list of things to tell the grandkids, ie. I have seen whole planets destroyed by man (Pluto) and new elements being born under a hot July Sun.

yup. if this turns out to be true i can think of some pseudo scientific claims that can be checked out with it including some by Bob Lazar.

This really is pretty exciting.
How you been Storm?

up and down. how about you?

same man. Alan died last week while Debbie and the kids where vacationing in Vegas. Denny and I where here taking care of him and he had a massive heart attack. outside of that, things are pretty good. was thinking of you and frey today actually, as I'll be grilling steaks for my birthday lol.

Hmmm... I'm thinking it depends on the aggressiveness of the ionisation source and quality of vacuum of their mass spec, lots of molecular ion fragments could weigh 292.
I'm reminded of a story of a fly in a mass spec. ;)
Lets see it duplicated on another instrument first.
Wait, I RTFA and it seems they were using ICP-MS, aggressive, but not high vacuum. Skimmer cones in ICP MS can introduce all kinds of issues. (Nature of the beast with an atmospheric ionisation source). I'd like to see it duplicated perhaps with a laser ablation TOF instrument.

very cool Bonk
