Title: BSG question
Post by: The Postman on November 08, 2008, 06:28:12 pm
Has anyone ever done a TOS viper model that could be used as a fighter model? All the ones I have found have too many polies to put 50 or 60 on the screen at once.

There ought to be a mark 1 at battleclinic.

I have found some great viper models there but none of them will work as a fighter without slowing the game down to a crawl.

I made a Mark 2 Viper of the "Re-imagined" BSG series, its at Battleclinic aswell.  I agree with you on the poly count.  I found out quickly you need to keep the poly count and textures low for the fighters for SFC.

I made the Mark 2 Viper as low poly count as I could.  It might work for you.

Great model! But it does slow the game when there are 60 of them out there though. If anyone does try to make a simpler viper and/or raider, there is a need.

Ya, I can understand that 60 of them could be a problem.  I don't think the poly count is the problem with that, its probably because the Mark 2 model I made uses 4 Textures instead of just one that the SFC stock models uses.  I tried to keep the Textures as simple as possible, but its a rather complicated design of craft so I was limited in what I could do.  Heck, and the textures are not even that big, 256 X 256 in size!  Just be careful of the new Mark 7 Viper I just made.  The Textures are not much more then the Mark 2, but I couldn't keep the Poly count down because that craft is even MORE complicated in design of its poly count.   :o

If anyone can make low Poly, low texture models of the Vipers and still make them look good, I will be amazed!  Thanks for the comments about the Mark 2 Viper, I was rather proud making that model.   ;D

After some testing, if the Mark 2 Viper model I made is giving you problems, try this technique.  Reduce the Textures to 128 X 128 or by 64 X 64.  If the model uses these lower texture settings, this might significantly increase your system performance if you trying to have a lot of fighters in the game.

Texture size, resolution, and DPI have more of an effect on the game than Polies. If you are going to decrease the size you might also Decreasing the Dots per inch on the textures first some are at 700 DPI and can easily be decreased to 200 DPI. Also reduce the colour Depth from 16 million colours down to 64k (24 bit) or 32K (24 bit) or move it down to 16 or 8 bit colours as well.

All of these will improve the preformance and if they are small ships the lower colour palet will not be noticed at all.

If the textures are resized to 128x128 or 64x64, will they still line up ok on the model? WOuld lowering the dpi be better?

The size of the texture will not alter the mapping on it. Resizing the texture will blur it and remove details
Lines that are 1 pixel thickness can disappear when you do this, and things tend to blur as well.

I would try lower the DPI and the amount of colour used first, then go for the resize. As always save the orginal file in a seperate directory or under a different name.

I am using an ATI 2600 Pro with 512mb DDR2, that should be enough.
