Well...
If someone is willing to help me with hosting (my first) server, I would be willing to put up Errand of War. I hadn't done much with it since the summer, but I suppose OP+ shiplist could be used. I'll look at the map again, I've got to figure out a way to get that to run without crashing the news server, if I can solve that problem we should be good to go.

I have been thinking of doing one how hard are they and I can't host it.DieHard needs to become moderator of the fed forum in SFC2.net.

Wow! That was fast work DH!

Does Frey have THOR up and running by now? I sent him the parts for this months ago.

So, is there interest for Errand of War? I would need THOR, my computer isn't "stable" enough to run a server.
If there is, I'll have the map fixed, I think I found the problem with the news crash, by this weekend.
Shiplist would be OP+ 4.0 with Bases restricted. Early era only. Limited economy hopefully limits the number of DNs. Oh, yeah, Klinks and Feds only. I viewed this server last fall as a test bed for a series of servers that would focus on theatres, rather than the entire quadrant. With the dwindling player base I felt that the best way to keep it going would be to stop the Grand Campaigns, with the humongous maps, and focus on short campaigns, with a small map. Where victory and defeat matter for more than just bragging rights. An overwhelming Klingon victory, for example, would change the next years campaign in that theatre from the Neutral Zone, to a bit deeper into Federation territory.
If the campaign runs well, I envisioned increasing the restrictions to DNs and BCHs (when the server year gets far enough to bring BCHs into the game), perhaps even CCs and CAs, and having the heavier metal assigned to a theatre from Allied/Coalition commands. For example, if the Klingons have the following theatres, Klingon/Lyran/Hydran Border, Klingon/Lyran/Kzinti Border, Klingon/Kzinti/Federation Boarder, Klingon/Federation Boarder, Klingon/Romulan/Federation Boarder. If the Klingons have seven C5s to deploy that year, the RMs decide what theatres to deploy them to, they can deploy one C5 to each theatre, that would leave them with 2 extra C5s, they can then put those extra C5s into a theatre that they want to press the attack in, or where they think they may need the extra defense. Alternatively they have the option of placing one or both of those C5s into a reserve box for use in an expeditionary fleet in the following year. (The Klingons with their central location wouldn't need this, but the other states would need it, if the Federation needed a fleet to help the Hydrans for example)

Bonk might get the forge back up for us real soon... ;D

What is involved in running a server? I might have a computer with the ability to put one up and leave it running, just need to know how.
Thanks!

Gentlemen, I've finally got around to downloading the SQL apps, but this is starting to go over my head very quickly.

I understand that. That is about where I am sitting on servers. SQL loaded, and me sitting going, hmmmm.
It's probably not that hard, just different. Good luck.

Thank, Marstone. I'm no computer guru, if you have trouble, then I might just be wasting my time. It can't be that difficult, can it?

You'll need to learn the SQL syntax. It isnt difficut once that part is done ;)

You're scaring me. I think I need someone to tell me line by line what I need to do to get what I want accomplished. First, I just want to put up a server with Firesoul's shiplist and stock missions. The only reason I want to use Firesoul's shiplist is because that is what everyone has.
After I see the server works, then I might want to change political and difficulty levels, 2 hex jump, custom missions, custom shiplist, and the like. First, I have to see if it will work.

Any news on if you've gotten further with your efforts to put up a server?

Give it a shot, I have been out of serious computer work for 18 years so I am way behind. From what I have looked at on SQL it isn't to bad. I just haven't had the time to sit and work on it. (to many other projects going right now, grrr 16 bit BMP image not working). When I get those done, I will give a server a try again.
-
OK, I won't have any time to play with it until the weekend. I'll start with Firesoul's OP+, go on to a custom shiplist with revised X-ships, and if a half dozen or more people play on the server, I might go onto a more comprehensive X-ship revision with a number of new models. Does this sound remotely interesting?

If I'm not mistaken to get a server 'up' you'll need a redirect from dyna. I got my copy of the server kit and a campaign running but couldn't log in because OP was looking to dyna for the server IP redirect, which I couldn't 'fix' from my end.

That should be done on it's own. I just had to fire up the server kit. It did the link with the dyna so other players could log into it. Now firewall and other things can cause problems with that, but I never had any trouble with the two test servers I had ran last year.

I would like to know if there was PBV limited server this means no BCHs and DNs?
