I pulled SFC 2 off the dusty shelf and it won't install on my machine. I never had it installed on this old Gateway desktop before. I've updated the OS (XP media center) and all other drivers.
The install screen does show up (where you click on either "exit" or "install") but the screen just closes after a few seconds and the install never starts. Anyone heard of this?

You might want to go in your control panel and use add/remove software and install it from there and what SFC2 are you referring to EAW or OP.you will need to patch up to 2036 if being Empires at War or 2552 if being Orion Pirates check the front site for those. It is best to do clean install when doing this and don't forget to delete the game folder.

Seems I remember reading that SFCII has problems with DX9c, it needs DX9b....
It has graphics issues on mine, too.
SFC2:OP runs just fine, maybe install that instead.
-
I don't know if I had problems with that but just use your control panel for Empires.
-
I am having the same issue that the OP is having. I have tried launching from the autoplay, from the setup.exe on the disk, and the add remove programs list. Anyone else have any ideas?

Hello,
Are you trying to run from the shortcut? After patching the game DO NOT run from the shortcut. You have to run StarFleet2.exe from the install direct or change the shortcut to point to StarFleet2.exe instead of SFC.exe
Thias should get you running.

The game isnt even installing. I put in the game and run any of the following three: The autoplay triggered by the disk, setup.exe, or setup.exe from the add/remove programs panel and nothing happens. When ran from autoplay, I get an install/exit menu, hit install, the disk spins, and nothing occurs. When the setup.exe file is ran from either location, the disk spins, and nothing occurs. Any help would be appreciated.

How many times have you been tryig to install or did you have it installed already if so it's corrupted or something? You sure you didn't delete the game folder as it should be installing fine.

OK I knew it was here somewhere.
Here is a link to install instructions by Cptn_Pestalence_XC:

I have an identical issue, but it seems people don't have an answer =/
The link has no help--he can only help with patches and mods--we can't get the game to actually install. We don't even get to the CD Key check.
I bought a new CD thinking the issue was that my original was too damaged or somesuch. Installing from the control panel doesn't help.
Trying to install gets the disk to whirr for a while and a setup.exe can be seen in my task manager until I kill the process, but I get nowhere beyond that. I have no idea what's going on. I have norton, but I have the problem even when I disable it. I have XP SP3. I have never installed the game on this particular PC before, but I did enjoy the game when it came out. I have a gateway desktop that's fairly aged, but it's newer than the game.
Anyone have ANY success if you were once stuck like this?

Unbelievably, I fixed it.
Turn off DMA and force PIO mode only for the IDE device controlling your CD. I don't even understand what that means, but a websearch can help you through the process. You will need to restart your machine (I had to do so a few times actually) but I can't believe it worked. I haven't played this game in ages. Very happy me.
BTW this problem was with SFC2:OP for me.

Great idea mariocerame. I don't think I ever clarified I have EAW. Unfortunately, the fix you recommended didn't work for my copy of the game.
-
a side two cents. I can never install my OP from my newer DVD drive, it pulls errors. I can only load it from my older CD drive. Probably has to do with the setting that Mariocerame was working with. I bet the older drive by default is run with those settings.

I finally found the problem on my machine: the keyboard drivers.
I've been using an old HP wireless keyboard with my old Gateway desktop. The machine would hang up whenever I logged off or restarted because of this mismatch. I just replaced the keyboard, and removed all HP drivers. Just out of curiosity I tried installing the game again, with no problems. EAW works great now.
