I am done basically with my second whip but I have included all the phaser mounts. Thing is it kinda makes it a bit heavy on the polys right now 5200.
If I don't show the phaser mounts I can probably can cut at least a thousands polys off. So I'm wondering whats peoples take is on phaser mounts show em or not.

Personally, i believe in texturing in the major details, and you can probably get away with a rectangular and two cubes for the physical mesh (well, not cubes, but a tapered hexagon would probably work).
Keeps the poly count low, and puts most of the visuals into the visual bitmap, which covers a lot of sins usually. ;)

5200 polies isn't a lot anymore. Modern video cards will chew it up and spit it out no problem.

First it ought to be known that I am a snob (just not as big a one as p81, RCS quads can stay as textures :buck2:). Therefore I believe that phaser turrets should be modeled on. Furthermore, I tend to model on running lights. Of course each of these take up at least 24 triangles (at most 56, depending if I want to have a lip on the half-sphere). I hate it, but when my model is over my poly-budget I'll leave them out.

Textured or modeled in? As a Hardpointer for BC, they are nice to have, cause you know whwere the weapons fire is coming from, and you can see where to place them better. Now I have not messed with SFC in years, so I dont remember the way weapons are set-up to fire, but an actual visual reference is nice.

I have a habit of kitbashing on phaser turrets and running lights, usually from Schtupp's or WZ's models. I say put them on.

If you can they look better modelled than textured, and yes i have gone both ways on them

As long as you already did them, may as will leave em on.
